Warriors Cruise Past Matadors in Big West Showdown
HONOLULU (Interstat) — The Hawaii Warriors used a dominant second-half surge to pull away from the Cal State Northridge Matadors, securing an 89-68 victory in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a raucous Stan Sheriff Center.
A crowd of 6,025 watched the Warriors improve to 15-4 overall and solidify their strong position in the conference race. The Matadors, who entered the game having won four of their last five, fell to 11-10.
The game’s pivotal sequence arrived early in the second half, transforming what had been a competitive contest into a commanding Hawaii lead. Leading 44-40 after a Larry Hughes 3-pointer for Northridge opened the second-half scoring, the Warriors unleashed a devastating 12-0 run over the next two minutes and 15 seconds.
The burst was fueled by stifling defense and efficient transition offense. It began with a Dre Bullock floating jumper, followed by a Hunter Erickson 3-pointer. After a Northridge timeout failed to stem the tide, Isaac Johnson took over. The 7-foot center from American Fork, Utah, stole a pass and finished with a dunk, then moments later drained a 3-pointer off an Erickson assist. Johnson capped the run with another 3-pointer, giving Hawaii a 55-42 lead and forcing another Matadors timeout.
Johnson’s personal eight-point flurry during the run exemplified his efficient night. He scored 18 points in just 15 minutes of action, shooting 7 of 10 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and adding a block and a steal. His presence inside altered numerous Northridge attempts and helped Hawaii control the paint.
The Warriors never looked back from that explosive run. They steadily expanded their lead throughout the half, shooting a blistering 61% from the field after halftime and outscoring the Matadors 49-34. The Matadors, who had matched Hawaii shot-for-shot for much of the first half and trailed only 40-34 at the break, could not counter the Warriors’ increased defensive intensity and offensive firepower.
Hawaii’s offense was a balanced and unselfish attack. Forward Gytis Nemeiksa of Kaunas, Lithuania, provided a team-high 16 points in 24 minutes, while Bullock added 13 points and Erickson orchestrated the offense with 10 points and eight assists. Isaac Finlinson contributed 11 points off the bench.
For Cal State Northridge, guard Larry Hughes of St. Louis kept his team within striking distance for much of the game, finishing with a game-high 19 points. Point guard Josiah Davis of Kitchener, Canada, managed 11 points and eight assists but was harassed into six turnovers by the active Hawaii defense. Forward Mahmoud Fofana of San Jose added 14 points and a block.
The Warriors’ defensive effort was a cornerstone of the victory, generating 14 steals and converting 19 Matador turnovers into 27 points. Hawaii also dominated in the paint, outscoring Northridge 46-30, and capitalized on second chances with 18 offensive rebounds leading to 19 points.
The win was Hawaii’s second in a row following a road loss at UC Santa Barbara, while Cal State Northridge saw its two-game winning streak snapped. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Hawaii entered the game with a 69.9% probability to win, a projection they exceeded with their second-half performance.
Both teams continue Big West play next Thursday. Hawaii travels to face UC Irvine, while Cal State Northridge returns home to host UC Davis. The Warriors and Matadors are scheduled for a rematch in Northridge on February 14.
