Preview: Portland State Vikings at Idaho Vandals
CALDWELL, Idaho (Interstat) — Two of the Big Sky Conference’s hottest teams will collide Saturday when the Portland State Vikings visit the Idaho Vandals at Idaho Central Credit Union Arena.
Both teams enter with identical 12-5 conference records and riding significant momentum. Portland State (12-5, 12-5 Big Sky) has won six straight games, the latest a 65-61 road victory at Eastern Washington on Thursday. Idaho (12-7, 12-5) has won three of its last four, including an 86-76 home win over Sacramento State on Thursday.
The matchup features a marquee backcourt duel between two of the league’s premier guards. Portland State is powered by Terri Miller, who is playing at an All-Conference level. Over his last six games, Miller is averaging 21.2 points and 5.8 assists per contest, including a triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists) against Sacramento State on Jan. 10. He scored 22 points with five assists in Thursday’s win.
Idaho counters with dynamic guard Kolton Mitchell, who has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games. He erupted for 32 points in a win over Eastern Washington on Jan. 3 and posted 17 points with five assists in Thursday’s victory.
The Vikings’ winning streak has been marked by clutch play, with overtime road wins at Weber State and Idaho State during the run. Their defense has also tightened, holding opponents to 65 points or fewer in three of the last four games.
The Vandals have shown resilience at home, boasting a 9-2 record in Caldwell this season. Their offense has been potent, scoring 84 points or more in four of their last six contests. Biko Johnson, who had 20 points against Sacramento State, provides crucial support for Mitchell.
This game carries major implications in the tightly packed Big Sky standings, where both teams currently sit near the top. The season series will conclude in Portland on Feb. 19.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST Saturday.
