Uelmen’s 30 Points Lead North Dakota Past Denver in Summit League Shootout

DENVER (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive second-half surge, the North Dakota Fighting Hawks outlasted the Denver Pioneers 93-86 in a Summit League men’s basketball contest Saturday afternoon at Magness Arena.

The victory, secured before an announced crowd of 1,137, pushed North Dakota to an even 12-12 overall record, while Denver fell to 9-13.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded early in the second half. Leading by a single point at halftime, North Dakota exploded with a 15-3 run over a four-minute span to seize control. The burst was fueled by defensive pressure and timely shooting. Zach Kraft, who finished with 13 points, ignited the run with a 3-pointer off a Denver turnover. After another Pioneers giveaway, Kraft struck again from beyond the arc. Greyson Uelmen then found Kraft for a third consecutive 3-pointer, forcing a Denver timeout with the Fighting Hawks leading 60-51. The sequence underscored a key disparity in the game, as North Dakota finished with eight steals and forced 13 Denver turnovers, converting them into 19 fast-break points.

Uelmen, a 6-foot-2 guard from Excelsior, Minnesota, was the game’s standout performer, scoring a game-high 30 points in just 23 minutes off the bench. His offensive outburst continued a torrid stretch, following performances of 26 and 19 points in his last two games. Uelmen’s efficiency was remarkable, shooting 9 of 15 from the field and adding 9 of 12 from the free-throw line.

Despite Uelmen’s heroics, Denver’s Carson Johnson kept the Pioneers within striking distance throughout. The 6-foot guard from Ankeny, Iowa, matched Uelmen’s scoring intensity with 32 points of his own, dishing out three assists. Johnson’s efforts, including 12 points from 3-point range, were part of a stellar shooting afternoon for both teams. Denver shot 50% from the field and 48% from 3-point range, while North Dakota countered with 50% shooting overall and 45.8% from deep.

North Dakota’s balance proved vital. Alongside Uelmen and Kraft, Eli King provided a strong all-around effort with 17 points, eight rebounds and a block. Garrett Anderson added 11 points and two blocks. Denver received complementary scoring from Shaun Wysocki with 12 points and Julius Rollins with 13, but the Pioneers were hampered by a lack of ball movement, registering only three assists as a team compared to eight for the Fighting Hawks.

The first half was a tightly contested shootout, featuring 11 lead changes. Denver took a narrow 46-45 advantage into the break behind 15 points from Johnson and efficient team shooting. The second half, however, belonged to North Dakota’s defensive energy and Uelmen’s offensive firepower. After Denver closed to within four points late, Uelmen answered with a clutch 3-pointer with 38 seconds remaining to extend the lead to seven and effectively seal the game.

The combined final score of 179 points significantly exceeded the pregame over/under line of 164.5, defying the expectation of a lower-scoring affair. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Denver had entered the game with a slight 51.9% probability to win and was installed as a 4-point favorite.

North Dakota looks to continue its momentum when it travels to face Saint Thomas (Minn.) on Thursday. Denver will aim to rebound on the road at Missouri-Kansas City on Wednesday. The two teams are scheduled for a rematch in Grand Forks on Feb. 7.
