Milwaukee Edges Youngstown State in Horizon League Thriller

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and missed opportunities, the Milwaukee Panthers edged the Youngstown State Penguins 65-64 in a Horizon League men’s basketball clash on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center.

The contest, played before a crowd of 2,187, was a grind from the outset, with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. Milwaukee’s aggressive defense, which generated 13 steals and forced 15 Youngstown State turnovers, proved to be the decisive factor. The Panthers converted those miscues into 21 points, a 10-point advantage in that category that ultimately covered the final margin.

Milwaukee improved to 9-13 overall, while Youngstown State fell to 10-11. The result defied the pregame expectations, as the Penguins had been installed as 6.5-point favorites and statistical models gave them a 65 percent probability of victory.

The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final 32 seconds. With Milwaukee trailing 64-63, Isaiah Dorceus drove to the basket and converted a layup to put the Panthers ahead by one. Following a full timeout, Youngstown State’s Jason Nelson committed a costly turnover when Milwaukee’s Stevie Elam stripped the ball near midcourt. Elam then raced ahead for a layup to extend the Panther lead to 65-64 with just eight seconds remaining.

Youngstown State had one final chance. Out of a timeout, the Penguins designed a play for leading scorer Cris Carroll, but his potential game-winning 3-point attempt from the wing missed. Milwaukee’s Amar Augillard secured the defensive rebound as time expired, sealing the narrow road victory.

The game was a story of inefficient offense. Both teams finished with identical 70 possessions, but neither could crack an offensive rating of 94. Milwaukee shot 41.4% from the field, while Youngstown State managed only 39.6%. From beyond the arc, the Penguins hit just 7 of 26 attempts.

Augillard led Milwaukee with 16 points and seven rebounds. Dorceus added 13 points and five rebounds, while Elam and Chandler Jackson each chipped in 10 points. Jackson’s defensive presence was notable with three blocks.

For Youngstown State, Carroll shouldered the offensive load with a game-high 19 points. Rich Rolf recorded a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Penguins’ ball movement was stifled by the Panther defense, resulting in only six team assists.

Milwaukee built a 32-30 halftime lead in a sloppy opening period that featured 16 combined turnovers. The Panthers maintained a small advantage for much of the second half, but could never pull away, setting the stage for the frantic final minute.

The Panthers’ defense, particularly its activity on the perimeter and in passing lanes, provided a stark contrast to its recent performances. Entering the game on a three-game losing streak where they had allowed an average of 92.7 points, Milwaukee held a Youngstown State team that scored 88 in its last outing to its second-lowest point total of the season.

Milwaukee next hosts Wright State on Jan. 30. Youngstown State looks to rebound when it hosts IU Indy on the same date. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Milwaukee on Feb. 25.
