California at Stanford

Preview of California-Stanford Men’s Basketball

PALO ALTO, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference matchup featuring two surging rivals will unfold Saturday when the California Golden Bears visit the Stanford Cardinal at Maples Pavilion.

Both teams enter with identical 14-5 overall records, adding high stakes to the longtime rivalry now framed within ACC play. California arrives buoyed by an 84-78 home victory over North Carolina last Saturday, while Stanford seeks to rebound from a lopsided 80-50 loss to Duke on the same day.

The Golden Bears have been led by guard Justin Pippen, who scored 19 points and dished five assists in the win over the Tar Heels. Over his last six games, Pippen is averaging 14.7 points and 3.5 assists. He is supported by a productive backcourt featuring John Camden (20 points vs. UNC) and Dai Dai Ames (19 points vs. UNC).

Stanford’s fortunes often hinge on the play of guard Jeremy Dent-Smith. He scored 18 points in the loss to Duke, following a 20-point performance in a 95-90 upset of North Carolina on Jan. 14. His scoring output has been volatile, however, with three single-digit performances in his last seven contests.

The Cardinal have shown resilience, winning close games against Louisville (80-76) and at Virginia Tech (69-68) earlier this month. California has struggled on the road in conference play, with losses at Virginia, Virginia Tech and a 71-56 defeat to Duke in their last three ACC away games.

This contest begins a critical stretch for both teams jockeying for position in the ACC standings. The rematch is scheduled for Feb. 21 at California.

Tip-off is set for Saturday, Jan. 24, at Maples Pavilion on Stanford’s campus.
