Sam Houston Rides Strong First Half to Victory Over Western Kentucky

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — Po’Boigh King scored 27 points and Sam Houston used a dominant first half to build a commanding lead it never relinquished, defeating Western Kentucky 73-58 in a Conference USA men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats (13-7, 4-3 CUSA) avenged a loss to the Hilltoppers earlier this month, taking control with a 20-4 run midway through the first half and leading by as many as 19 points before halftime. Sam Houston led 38-21 at the break and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half.

The most important part of the game was Sam Houston’s stifling first-half defense and its immediate offensive response to Western Kentucky’s early challenge. After the Hilltoppers took a brief 2-0 lead on a Grant Newell jumper, the Bearkats locked down, forcing Western Kentucky into a series of turnovers and contested shots. Over the next eight minutes, Sam Houston unleashed its decisive run, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 20-6 lead. The stretch was fueled by active hands in the passing lanes, leading to easy transition baskets, and a methodical half-court offense that found gaps in the Western Kentucky defense. This early surge established a tone of defensive intensity and offensive efficiency that Western Kentucky could never overcome, effectively deciding the contest long before halftime.

King, a 6-foot-4 guard from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, was the catalyst, hitting 10 of his 19 field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers. He added a rebound and an assist in 30 minutes, continuing a strong stretch of play that has seen him average over 15 points per game in conference play.

He was supported by a balanced effort from Kashie Natt, who had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Veljko Ilic, who posted 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Damon Nicholas contributed eight points, four rebounds and five assists for the Bearkats, who shot 49.2% from the field and shared the ball effectively with nine assists.

Western Kentucky (11-9, 3-4) was plagued by offensive struggles and ball security issues all night. The Hilltoppers shot just 37.3% from the floor and committed 17 turnovers, which Sam Houston converted into 19 points. LJ Hackman led the Hilltoppers with 14 points, while Leeroy Odiahi and Grant Newell each added 10. The team managed only three assists against the 17 turnovers, highlighting their disjointed offensive performance.

Sam Houston’s defensive pressure was relentless, tallying nine steals and two blocks. The Bearkats also won the possession battle, committing just nine turnovers of their own and scoring 73 points on 68 possessions for an efficient offensive rating of 106.6. Western Kentucky managed only 58 points on 66 trips, an offensive rating of 88.4.

Despite the lopsided score, Sam Houston struggled at the free-throw line, making only 8 of 20 attempts. Western Kentucky was better from the line, hitting 12 of 16, but it was not enough to offset their poor shooting from the field, where they made only 8 of 23 from 3-point range.

The victory improves Sam Houston’s record in Johnson Coliseum and keeps them in the upper half of the Conference USA standings. Western Kentucky, which defeated Sam Houston 102-91 in Bowling Green on Jan. 2, has now lost three of its last four games.

An announced crowd of 1,026 watched the game.
