Villanova at Connecticut
Top-Ranked Huskies Host Wildcats in Big East Showdown
HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The No. 1-ranked Connecticut Huskies, boasting the nation’s premier record, will put their 18-1 mark on the line Saturday when they host the 15-4 Villanova Wildcats in a pivotal Big East Conference men’s basketball clash at XL Center.
The Huskies, whose only loss came in non-conference play, have been a model of consistency, winning their first seven league games. They are led by dominant forward Tarris Reed, who is coming off a 15-point, 11-rebound, three-block performance in a narrow 64-62 road win at Georgetown on Jan. 17. Over his last six games, Reed has averaged 14.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks, anchoring Connecticut’s interior.
Villanova, seeking a statement road victory, arrives after a 66-51 home win over Georgetown on Wednesday. The Wildcats’ success hinges on guard Acaden Lewis, who scored 15 points in that victory. Lewis has been a dynamic playmaker, including a 20-point, eight-assist effort in a win at Marquette on Jan. 10. However, Villanova has shown vulnerability in conference play, with recent losses to Creighton and St. John’s.
This matchup is the first of two regular-season meetings between the rivals. They will meet again at Villanova on Feb. 21. The Huskies have won nine straight games since their lone defeat. Villanova has won four of its last five.
Saturday’s contest features a stark contrast in momentum. Connecticut has navigated a tough early conference slate, including an overtime win at Providence and a decisive victory over Marquette. Villanova has split its last four Big East games, highlighting the challenge of facing the conference’s top team on the road.
The game will tip off at 12 p.m. EST on Saturday, Jan. 24, at XL Center in Hartford.
