Mercer at Wofford
Preview of Saturday’s Southern Conference Showdown
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — A pivotal Southern Conference matchup featuring two of the league’s hottest teams will unfold Saturday when the Mercer Bears visit the Wofford Terriers at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
Both teams enter with identical 13-7 overall records, setting the stage for a critical contest in the conference standings. The matchup is a quick rematch from Jan. 10, when Mercer’s high-powered offense secured a 109-97 home victory over Wofford.
Mercer rides a five-game winning streak, most recently an 88-76 victory over Western Carolina on Wednesday. Guard Zaire Williams has been a catalyst, averaging 17.1 points during the streak. He posted 23 points and five assists in the latest win and tallied eight points, five rebounds and six assists in the first meeting with Wofford.
The Terriers have responded from that loss with three consecutive wins, including an 88-78 triumph over Samford on Wednesday. That victory was fueled by a career-high 36 points from dynamic guard Kahmare Holmes. Holmes, who scored 22 in the loss at Mercer, is averaging 27.3 points over his last three games, establishing himself as one of the conference’s most explosive scorers.
The game pits Mercer’s offensive rhythm against Wofford’s home-court advantage. The Bears have scored 100 or more points in three of their last five games. The Terriers, however, are 8-1 at home this season, with the lone blemish a 76-67 loss to Chattanooga on Jan. 14.
Saturday’s winner will gain a valuable tiebreaker and momentum heading into the second half of the conference schedule. For Mercer, it’s a chance to sweep the season series and solidify its position atop the league. For Wofford, it’s an opportunity for redemption and to prove its defensive adjustments can slow the Bears’ attack.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
