Georgetown at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Two teams mired in identical slumps will meet Saturday when the Providence Friars host the Georgetown Hoyas in a Big East Conference matchup at Dunkin’ Center.

Both teams enter the Jan. 24 contest with 9-10 overall records and are seeking to halt extended losing streaks. Georgetown has dropped five consecutive games, most recently a 51-66 loss at Villanova on Wednesday. Providence has lost three of its last four, including a heartbreaking 104-105 overtime defeat at Marquette on Monday.

The Friars will lean on guard Jaylin Sellers, who is coming off a career-high 27-point, 5-assist performance in the overtime loss to Marquette. Sellers has been a consistent scoring threat, averaging 24 points over his last three games where he played significant minutes. He will be supported by forward Stefan Vaaks, who added 26 points against the Golden Eagles.

For the Hoyas, finding consistent offense has been a struggle during their skid. Guard Kayvaun Mulready provided a spark off the bench with a team-high 12 points in 24 minutes against Villanova, but his playing time and production have fluctuated significantly in recent weeks. Georgetown will need more from its starting backcourt of Caleb Williams and Isaiah Abraham, who combined for just 15 points in the midweek loss.

The game features two programs trying to regain footing in the congested middle of the Big East standings. Providence’s recent outings have been high-scoring affairs, with the team averaging 95 points over its last three games. Georgetown’s struggles are rooted at the offensive end, having failed to reach 70 points in four of its five consecutive losses.

History suggests a close contest; the Friars’ last three games have been decided by a total of four points, including two overtime sessions. Georgetown’s last two road games were narrow defeats at Creighton (83-86 in OT) and DePaul (50-56).

Saturday’s winner will gain a critical conference victory and a temporary reprieve from their recent woes, while the loser will be saddled with a losing record nearing the season’s final stretch.
