Haggerty’s 34 Points Lift Wildcats Past Utes in Tight Finish

MANHATTAN, Kan. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive individual performances and a frantic final minute, Kansas State survived a career-high scoring night from Utah’s Terrence Brown to edge the Utes 81-78 on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Wildcats, who led for over 38 minutes, saw a once-comfortable 15-point first-half lead nearly evaporate in the face of Brown’s relentless attack. The Utah guard, a junior from Minneapolis, poured in 33 points, but his potential game-tying 3-pointer from the top of the key rimmed out at the buzzer, allowing Kansas State to escape.

Kansas State was propelled by its own standout guard, PJ Haggerty, who answered Brown’s output with 34 points of his own. The sophomore from Crosby, Texas, was instrumental down the stretch, scoring 12 of Kansas State’s final 15 points to hold off the Utes’ comeback bid. Haggerty’s clutch play snapped a personal streak of strong performances in losses, as the Wildcats improved to 10-9 overall.

The game’s decisive sequence unfolded in the final 39 seconds. With Kansas State clinging to a 79-77 lead, Haggerty missed a jump shot, but Utah could not secure the defensive rebound. Following a timeout, Haggerty drained a difficult step-back jumper from the elbow with 39 seconds remaining, pushing the Wildcat lead to four.

Utah’s Don McHenry was fouled on the ensuing possession and made the first of two free throws to cut the deficit to 81-78 with 11 seconds left. After intentionally missing the second, Utah forced a turnover when Haggerty lost the ball out of bounds near midcourt with 19 seconds remaining, giving the Utes a final chance.

Out of a timeout, Brown drove hard to the basket but missed a contested layup. The Utes retained possession after the ball went out of bounds off a Wildcat with 6 seconds left. Inbounding from the sideline, Utah worked the ball to Brown for a clean look from beyond the arc, but his shot hit the back iron as time expired.

The first half set the stage for the dramatic finish, as Kansas State built its lead behind a torrid shooting display from David Castillo and Nate Johnson. Castillo scored 15 of his 20 points before halftime, including three 3-pointers, while Johnson added 14 of his 17 points in the opening period. Their efforts helped the Wildcats to a 46-43 halftime advantage despite Brown’s 18 first-half points for Utah.

The Utes, who fell to 9-10, struggled to contain the Wildcats’ backcourt trio for long stretches. Haggerty, Castillo, and Johnson combined for 71 of Kansas State’s 81 points. Utah found supplementary scoring from Seydou Traore, who had 15 points and a key first-half block, and McHenry, who also finished with 15 points.

Kansas State’s offense was efficient when it mattered most, particularly in leveraging Utah’s 15 turnovers into 19 points. The Wildcats also managed a 36-34 edge in rebounding, with key offensive boards in the final minute proving critical.

Defensively, Kansas State received important contributions from Taj Manning, whose 34 minutes included a block and two steals, often while guarding multiple positions. Utah’s interior presence was felt through Josh Hayes, who provided nine points and two blocks off the bench.

The victory moves Kansas State above .500 as it prepares for a pivotal showdown with in-state rival Kansas on Saturday. The Wildcats will look to build momentum after ending a four-game skid. Utah, meanwhile, continues a tough stretch of conference play, needing to regroup quickly before facing BYU on the road this weekend. The Utes have now lost four of their last six games.

An announced crowd of 8,061 watched the back-and-forth contest, which saw 10 lead changes and was tied on six occasions, though Kansas State controlled the tempo for the majority of the night. The game ultimately hinged on the final possessions, where Haggerty’s scoring prowess and a final defensive stand secured the win for the home team.
