Northern Arizona at Portland State

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — A surging Portland State team will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts a struggling Northern Arizona squad in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the Stott Center.

The Vikings (9-5, 2-0 Big Sky) have opened conference play with consecutive overtime road wins, followed by a dominant 96-69 victory over Sacramento State last Saturday. They are powered by forward Tre-Vaughn Minott, who is coming off a historic 23-point, 20-rebound performance against the Hornets. Minott has recorded double-doubles in two of his last three games.

Portland State’s backcourt is equally formidable, as evidenced by guard Terri Miller’s triple-double (14 points, 10 rebounds, 13 assists) in the same game. The Vikings average 90.3 points per game in their three conference contests.

They face a Northern Arizona team mired in a five-game losing streak. The Lumberjacks (6-11, 0-3) are coming off a heartbreaking 81-79 home loss to Idaho State on Jan. 10. Guard Chris Komin led NAU with 16 points in that defeat and has been a bright spot, averaging 12.3 points over his last three Big Sky games. Karl Poom added a season-high 22 points in the loss.

Overall, Northern Arizona has struggled defensively, allowing 77.6 points per game during its current skid. Containing Portland State’s high-powered offense, which has topped 90 points in three straight, will be the primary challenge.

The Vikings have won their last two games in overtime, showcasing resilience, while the Lumberjacks have lost four games by single digits this season, including their last two conference defeats.

Saturday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in Flagstaff on Feb. 12.
