Preview: Wofford Terriers at Furman Paladins
TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (Interstat) — Southern Conference rivals Furman and Wofford will meet Saturday at Timmons Arena, with the Paladins looking to protect their home court and solidify their position near the top of the league standings.
Furman (13-5) enters the contest riding a three-game winning streak, most recently a 77-73 road victory at Samford on Wednesday. The Paladins are led by guard Alex Wilkins, who is averaging 20.3 points over his last six games. He scored a season-high 28 points in the win over Samford.
Wofford (11-7) seeks to rebound after a 76-67 home loss to Chattanooga on Wednesday snapped its three-game win streak. The Terriers are paced by guard Kahmare Holmes, who has scored 22 or more points in three of his last four outings. Holmes is coming off a 22-point performance against the Mocs.
The matchup features two of the conference’s top offensive talents in Wilkins and Holmes. Wilkins has showcased a versatile scoring punch for Furman, while Holmes has been a consistent force for Wofford, nearly recording a triple-double with 16 points, seven rebounds and nine assists in a win at The Citadel on Jan. 3.
Furman holds the better overall record and has won five of its last six games. Wofford has shown resilience on the road this season, posting a 4-3 record away from home, including a victory at Western Carolina.
Historically, games between these Upstate South Carolina rivals are tightly contested. The teams will meet again in Spartanburg on Feb. 21.
Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. EST tip-off at Timmons Arena on the Furman University campus.
