Wake Forest at Florida State
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two Atlantic Coast Conference teams looking to halt slides will meet Saturday when the Wake Forest Demon Deacons visit the Florida State Seminoles at Donald L. Tucker Center.
Wake Forest (10-7, 1-3 ACC) has lost three of its last four, including an 84-87 heartbreaker at then-North Carolina on Jan. 10. The Demon Deacons have been led by the dynamic backcourt play of Nate Calmese, who is averaging 19.5 points and 5.5 assists over his last four games. He poured in 28 points and dished 9 assists in the loss to the Tar Heels.
Florida State (7-10, 0-4) is still seeking its first conference win after a 86-94 loss at Syracuse on Tuesday. The Seminoles have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 98.5 points in their last two ACC home games. Freshman guard Kobe MaGee has provided a bright spot, scoring 20 points against the Orange and averaging 15.8 points over his last four contests.
The matchup pits Wake Forest’s potent offense, which scored 81 or more points in three of its four ACC games, against a Florida State defense that has consistently been overmatched in league play. The Demon Deacons will need to improve their ball security after committing 15 turnovers in their loss to UNC.
For the Seminoles, finding consistent scoring beyond MaGee is critical. They shot 50% from the field against Syracuse but were undone by 17 turnovers and defensive lapses.
Historically, the series has been tight, with each team winning on its home floor in recent seasons. Wake Forest holds a narrow edge in the overall ACC standings, but both teams are in the bottom half of the conference and desperately need a win to build momentum.
Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. EST tipoff. Wake Forest hosts SMU next on Jan. 20, while Florida State travels to face Miami (Fla.) on the same date.
