Purdue Rallies Past Iowa in Big Ten Matchup

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dramatic momentum shift, the Purdue Boilermakers overcame a sluggish first half with a dominant second-half performance to defeat the Iowa Hawkeyes 79-72 in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a sold-out Mackey Arena.

A crowd of 14,876 watched as the Hawkeyes, leveraging sharp early shooting and disruptive defense, built a lead that grew to as many as 11 points in the opening period. Iowa took a 34-31 advantage into halftime, but the second half belonged entirely to Purdue, which outscored the visitors 48-38 after the break to secure its 16th victory against a single loss this season. Iowa fell to 12-5.

The most important part of the game was Purdue’s comprehensive and sustained surge to open the second half, which completely reversed the contest’s trajectory. After being held in check for much of the first half, Purdue’s offense ignited with a 15-4 run over the first five minutes of the second period. The spurt erased Iowa’s halftime lead and established a cushion the Boilermakers would not relinquish.

Central to that decisive run was the play of point guard Braden Smith, a Westfield, Indiana, native who orchestrated the Purdue attack. Smith finished with a team-high 16 points and eight assists in 36 minutes, consistently breaking down the Iowa defense to create opportunities for himself and his teammates. His driving layup at the 17:54 mark gave Purdue its first lead since the game’s opening minutes, and he repeatedly answered Iowa baskets with scores or setups to stifle any potential rally.

Iowa, which had controlled the first half behind the scoring of Bennett Stirtz and early three-pointers, found its rhythm disrupted by Purdue’s increased defensive intensity and offensive efficiency. The Hawkeyes’ Stirtz, a guard from Liberty, Missouri, led all scorers with 19 points, while teammate Kael Combs of Nixa, Missouri, added 16. Forward Cam Manyawu of Kansas City, Missouri, provided an interior presence with 13 points.

But Purdue’s balance and depth proved overwhelming as the game progressed. Fletcher Loyer of Fort Wayne, Indiana, scored 11 points, and Trey Kaufman-Renn of Sellersburg, Indiana, contributed 12 points, many during the pivotal second-half stretch. Oscar Cluff, a 6-foot-11 center from Australia, added 10 points and key interior defense, including a critical blocked shot in the final minutes.

The Boilermakers’ second-half offensive execution was a stark contrast to the first, where they shot poorly and committed untimely turnovers. They corrected those issues after halftime, sharing the ball effectively and converting at the free-throw line down the stretch to close out the game. Iowa, despite a valiant effort that included cutting the deficit to four points late, could not string together enough stops to complete a comeback, hampered by turnovers and Purdue’s ability to score in response.

The victory extended Purdue’s strong start to conference play and continued its home-court dominance. The Boilermakers, who were installed as 9.5-point pregame favorites, saw the total score of 151 go over the betting line of 143. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Purdue entered the game with an 88.8% probability to win.

Iowa, coming off a home loss to Illinois, has now dropped two consecutive conference games. The Hawkeyes will look to rebound on the road at Indiana this Saturday. Purdue, meanwhile, embarks on a challenging West Coast trip, facing Southern California on Saturday and UCLA next Tuesday as part of the Big Ten’s expanded scheduling.

The teams are scheduled to meet again in Iowa City on Feb. 14.
