Preview: Marquette Golden Eagles at Saint John’s Red Storm

NEW YORK (Interstat) — The surging Saint John’s Red Storm will look to solidify their standing near the top of the Big East when they host the struggling Marquette Golden Eagles on Tuesday night at Carnesecca Arena.

Saint John’s (11-5, 3-1 Big East) enters on a high note after a dominant 90-73 road victory over then-Creighton last Saturday. The Red Storm have won four of their last five, showcasing a balanced attack. Oziyah Sellers has been a catalyst, averaging 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists over his last six games. In the win over Creighton, he filled the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Conversely, Marquette (6-11, 1-3) is mired in a difficult season, having lost eight of its last ten games. The Golden Eagles are coming off a heartbreaking 76-73 home loss to Villanova on Saturday, a game in which they led by 10 points with under seven minutes to play. Their lone conference win was a 66-65 squeaker over Xavier on Jan. 7.

The Golden Eagles will lean heavily on guard Nigel James, who is in the midst of a stellar individual stretch. James is averaging 21.2 points and 4.7 assists over his last six contests, including a 31-point, six-assist performance in the loss to Villanova. His backcourt battle with Sellers will be a key matchup.

Saint John’s has found success with depth and defense during its recent run, holding opponents to an average of 68.2 points during its 4-1 stretch. Marquette has struggled with consistency, particularly down the stretch of close games.

This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams this season. They will meet again in Milwaukee on Feb. 18.

Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026, at Carnesecca Arena on the campus of St. John’s University in Queens.
