Villanova Visits Providence in Big East Clash
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — The surging Villanova Wildcats aim to continue their strong start to conference play when they visit the Providence Friars in a Big East matchup Tuesday night at Dunkin’ Center.
Villanova (13-3, 3-1 Big East) enters on a high note after a 76-73 road victory at then-Marquette on Saturday. The Wildcats have won five of their last six, with their only loss in that stretch a narrow 76-72 defeat to Creighton.
Providence (8-8, 1-3) looks to halt a two-game skid and gain traction in the league standings. The Friars are coming off a 97-84 loss at Xavier and a 103-98 overtime heartbreaker against then-Connecticut last week.
The game features a compelling backcourt duel. Villanova is led by dynamic guard Acaden Lewis, who is averaging 18.3 points and 6.3 assists over his last three games. He posted 20 points and eight assists in the win at Marquette.
Providence will counter with guard Stefan Vaaks, who scored 21 points against Xavier and is averaging 17.5 points in his last two outings. Forward Jason Edwards, who had 16 points and five rebounds against the Musketeers, provides additional scoring punch.
Villanova’s success has been built on defense and balance. Alongside Lewis, forwards Matthew Hodge and Duke Brennan have been consistent contributors, combining for 26 points and nine rebounds against Marquette.
The Friars, meanwhile, have shown offensive firepower but struggled to close games. They have scored 98 and 84 points in their last two contests, both losses, highlighting defensive vulnerabilities.
This begins a pivotal stretch for Providence, which hosts Creighton on Friday. Villanova seeks to maintain pace near the top of the conference before a rematch with the Friars in Philadelphia on Jan. 30.
Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on FS1.
