Williams Leads Lipscomb Past Florida Gulf Coast in ASUN Matchup
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a blistering second-half shooting display, the Lipscomb Bisons overcame a halftime deficit to defeat the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 84-77 in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Alico Arena.
A crowd of 2,344 saw the visiting Bisons (10-7, 2-1) erase a two-point halftime disadvantage by erupting for 56 points after the break, fueled by a remarkable 14-for-27 performance from three-point range for the game. The Eagles (7-10, 1-2), despite a more efficient afternoon from the field overall, could not keep pace from beyond the arc, connecting on just 5 of 17 attempts.
The most important part of the game unfolded early in the second half, as Lipscomb quickly dismantled Florida Gulf Coast’s slim 30-28 lead. The Bisons opened the period on a 14-5 run, seizing control with a barrage of three-pointers and aggressive play in the paint. This surge established a lead Lipscomb would not relinquish, as they consistently answered every Eagle push with a critical basket, often from long distance.
Charlie Williams, a 6-foot-10 forward from Carmel, Indiana, led all scorers with 27 points for Lipscomb, adding seven rebounds and three blocks. His performance marked a season-high in scoring and provided a pivotal interior presence to complement the Bisons’ perimeter attack. Titas Sargiunas of Kaunas, Lithuania, contributed 19 points, all but two of which came from three-pointers, going 5-for-11 from deep. Grant Asman added 14 points, while point guard Mateo Esmeraldo directed the offense with 11 assists.
Florida Gulf Coast was paced by a dominant double-double from J.R. Konieczny. The 6-foot-7 junior from South Bend, Indiana, scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Rahmir Barno of Philadelphia facilitated the Eagles’ offense with 15 points and seven assists. Rory Stewart added 12 points.
While the Eagles won the turnover battle, forcing 13 Lipscomb miscues against 11 of their own and recording 12 steals, they were ultimately undone by the three-point line and the free-throw stripe. Lipscomb’s 14 made threes compared to FGCU’s five created a 27-point disparity from deep, and the Bisons sealed the victory by making 18 of 21 free throws, while the Eagles converted just 12 of 19.
The game was a tale of offensive efficiency styles. Lipscomb scored its 84 points on just 71 possessions, an offensive rating of 118.4, leveraging their exceptional three-point shooting. Florida Gulf Coast, which shot 30-for-59 from the field, managed 77 points on 73 possessions for a 105.4 offensive rating, but could not match the explosive scoring runs generated by the Bisons’ outside shooting.
Lipscomb, which had lost at Stetson in its previous outing, returns home to host Bellarmine on Thursday. Florida Gulf Coast, which has now dropped two straight conference games, will look to rebound at home against Queens University of Charlotte on the same night.
