Abilene Christian at Texas-Arlington
Preview: Abilene Christian Wildcats at Texas-Arlington Mavericks
ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season Western Athletic Conference clash is set for Saturday when the Abilene Christian Wildcats visit the Texas-Arlington Mavericks at College Park Center.
Both teams enter with identical 10-win records and momentum from conference victories in their last outings. The Wildcats (10-6, 1-1 WAC) edged Tarleton State 84-80 on the road Thursday, while the Mavericks (10-5, 2-1 WAC) last played on Jan. 3, securing an 86-77 win at Southern Utah.
The matchup features two of the WAC’s most dynamic scorers. Abilene Christian is led by guard Bradyn Hubbard, who is coming off a 22-point performance at Tarleton State and has scored 22 or more points in three of his last five games. His most complete effort was an 22-point, 10-rebound, 6-assist showing in an 85-68 win over Utah Valley on Jan. 3.
Texas-Arlington counters with high-scoring guard Marcell McCreary, who is averaging 24.2 points over his last five contests. He erupted for a career-high 39 points in the Mavericks’ win at Southern Utah, showcasing his ability to single-handedly dominate a game.
The Wildcats have shown resilience on the road, with wins at Pepperdine, Texas Southern and Tarleton State this season, but also have suffered double-digit losses at Arizona and BYU. The Mavericks have protected their home court with a 63-51 win over California Baptist on Jan. 1, but also dropped a home game to Tarleton State 69-63 on Dec. 29.
For Abilene Christian, support for Hubbard will be key. Rich Smith (16 points) and Cade Hornecker (12 points) provided crucial contributions in the win over Tarleton State. Texas-Arlington will look for secondary scoring behind McCreary from players like Raysean Seamster, who had 11 points and 5 assists against Southern Utah.
This game represents an important benchmark for both teams seeking to establish themselves in the upper tier of the WAC standings. The rematch is scheduled for Feb. 12 in Abilene.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Saturday at College Park Center.
