Western Kentucky at UTEP
EL PASO, Texas (Interstat) — Western Kentucky looks to rebound from a conference road loss when it visits a UTEP team fresh off an overtime victory in a Conference USA matchup Saturday.
The Hilltoppers (9-6) fell 80-64 at New Mexico State on Thursday, snapping a two-game win streak. UTEP (5-10) earned an 83-80 overtime win over Middle Tennessee the same afternoon, providing a boost for a Miner squad that had lost seven of its previous eight games.
Western Kentucky’s offense, which averages 77.5 points per game, will be paced by forward Armelo Boone. The standout has been a consistent force, averaging 14.4 points over his last five contests. He posted a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 102-91 win over Sam Houston on Jan. 2.
UTEP will counter with guard Elijah Jones, who is coming off a 20-point, three-block performance in the win over Middle Tennessee. Jones has shown scoring bursts, including a 24-point outing in a win over North Dakota State on Dec. 22, but the Miners have struggled offensively, averaging just 68.1 points per game this season.
The Hilltoppers have shown a potent offense at home but have been less consistent on the road, where they are 1-3 in their last four away games. UTEP is 4-4 at the Don Haskins Center this season.
Historically, Western Kentucky holds a 14-9 series advantage over UTEP, though the teams split their two meetings last season, each winning on their home court.
This game opens a critical stretch for both teams in the Conference USA standings. Western Kentucky aims to stay above .500 in league play, while UTEP seeks to build momentum from its dramatic overtime victory and climb out of the conference cellar.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. MST at the Don Haskins Center.
