Penn State at Purdue
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — The No. 1-ranked Purdue Boilermakers, riding a nine-game winning streak, will look to continue their dominant start when they host the Penn State Nittany Lions in a Big Ten men’s basketball matchup on Saturday.
Purdue (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten) has been nearly flawless this season, with its lone loss coming against Iowa State on Dec. 6. The Boilermakers’ offense, orchestrated by point guard Braden Smith, has been overwhelming. Smith is averaging 13.4 points and 10.2 assists, coming off a 23-point, 7-assist performance in an 81-73 win over Washington on Wednesday. His playmaking has fueled a team averaging 86.1 points per game.
Penn State (9-6, 0-2) enters Mackey Arena seeking its first conference victory after narrow losses to Michigan State and Michigan, followed by a defeat to Illinois. The Nittany Lions’ hopes will lean on guard Ivan Juric, who scored a team-high 20 points in the 74-72 loss to Michigan on Tuesday. Juric has been a bright spot, providing offensive bursts, but Penn State has struggled with consistency, particularly in a 46-80 loss to Pittsburgh last month.
The venue presents a major challenge for the visitors. Purdue is 8-0 at home this season, winning by an average margin of 33.5 points. The Boilermakers’ defense has held opponents to 60.7 points per game in West Lafayette.
For Penn State, containing Smith and Purdue’s efficient interior game will be paramount. The Nittany Lions have shown resilience in close conference games but have not faced an opponent of Purdue’s caliber on the road this season.
This game tips off a critical stretch for both teams. Purdue faces a quick turnaround with a home game against Iowa next Wednesday. Penn State continues a tough road slate, needing a signature win to bolster its postseason resume before hosting UCLA next week.
