Mississippi State at Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — Two men’s basketball teams seeking momentum to open Southeastern Conference play will meet Saturday when the Mississippi State Bulldogs visit the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena.
Both teams enter the 2026 conference opener with recent results highlighting their potential and vulnerabilities. Mississippi State (8-5) arrives riding a four-game winning streak, capped by a dramatic 101-98 overtime road victory at then-Texas on Jan. 3. Kentucky (9-6) looks to rebound from consecutive losses, including a 73-68 home defeat to Missouri on Wednesday.
The matchup features two of the SEC’s most dynamic guards. Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard is averaging 25.5 points over his last four games, erupting for 38 points in the win at Texas. His backcourt counterpart, Kentucky’s Otega Oweh, has been a consistent force, scoring 20 or more points in three of his last five outings while contributing across the stat sheet.
The Bulldogs have found their rhythm after a 3-5 start, with their winning streak featuring high-scoring performances. Alongside Hubbard, guard Jayden Epps scored 27 against Texas. However, their defense, which allowed 87 points to Long Island and 83 to New Mexico earlier this season, will be tested.
Kentucky’s season has been marked by extremes, including a 103-point offensive outburst against North Carolina Central and a 35-point loss to Gonzaga. The Wildcats have struggled to find consistent play outside of Oweh, with their depth being questioned after the recent home losses.
Saturday’s contest is the conference opener for both teams. Mississippi State visits Texas A&M next Wednesday, while Kentucky travels to LSU next Wednesday.
Tipoff is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10, at Rupp Arena. The game will be televised on the SEC Network.
