SMU at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — A surging Duke team looks to protect its home court against a high-scoring SMU squad led by one of the nation’s most dynamic guards when the Blue Devils host the Mustangs in an Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils (14-1, 2-0 ACC) have won four straight since their only loss, a one-point defeat to Texas Tech on Dec. 20. They are led by sophomore forward Cameron Boozer, a national player of the year candidate averaging 23.9 points and 7.4 rebounds. Boozer is coming off a 27-point performance in Tuesday’s 84-73 road win at Louisville and has scored at least 17 points in every game this season.

They face an SMU team (12-3, 1-1) that boasts the nation’s fifth-ranked offense, averaging 91.9 points per game. The Mustangs’ attack is engineered by senior guard Boopie Miller, who leads the ACC with 8.7 assists per game to go with 20.7 points. Miller is fresh from a 23-point, 4-assist effort in a narrow 74-70 road loss at Clemson on Wednesday. He recorded a triple-double with 27 points and 12 assists in a win over North Carolina on Jan. 3.

Duke’s defense, allowing just 72.7 points per game, will face its toughest test in weeks. The Blue Devils have not faced an offense ranked higher than 45th nationally since November. The matchup between Boozer’s efficient interior play and Miller’s perimeter creativity will be central.

SMU, in its first ACC season, seeks a program-defining road victory. Its three losses have come by an average of just 6.3 points. Duke, however, has been nearly unbeatable at home, winning 42 of its last 43 games at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The game tips off at 2 p.m. EST Saturday as part of the ACC’s conference schedule. Duke then begins a West Coast road swing at California, while SMU returns home to host Virginia Tech.
