UNC Greensboro at East Tennessee State

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — A surging East Tennessee State team will look to continue its strong start to Southern Conference play when it hosts a struggling UNC Greensboro squad on Saturday at ETSU Athletic Center.

The Buccaneers (11-5) have won three straight games, including an 81-67 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday, to open conference action 2-0. The Spartans (6-10) have dropped their last two, falling 97-85 at Wofford on Wednesday after opening SoCon play with two home wins.

ETSU’s success has been fueled by a balanced attack and stout defense, holding opponents to an average of 62.3 points during its win streak. Forward Cam Morris has been a key contributor, averaging 19.3 points over his last three games. He scored 25 points against VMI.

UNC Greensboro will rely on the hot hand of guard Justin Neely, who is averaging 21.8 points over his last five contests. He poured in 26 points in the loss to Wofford. The Spartans’ offense, however, has been inconsistent, scoring 65 points or fewer in three of their 10 losses.

The Buccaneers have dominated recent matchups at home, winning the last three meetings in Johnson City. ETSU’s defense will aim to contain Neely and force other Spartans to beat them. UNC Greensboro, seeking its first road win in conference play, must improve its perimeter defense after allowing Wofford to shoot 54% from the field.

Saturday’s contest is the first of two scheduled meetings this season between the SoCon rivals. They are set to meet again in Greensboro on Feb. 18.

Following this game, ETSU travels to face Western Carolina on Jan. 14, while UNC Greensboro returns home to host The Citadel on Jan. 15.
