Red Storm Pull Away in Second Half to Top Bulldogs
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a game tied at halftime, the Saint John’s Red Storm unleashed a dominant defensive performance in the second half to pull away from the Butler Bulldogs for an 84-70 victory in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a sold-out Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The contest was a tale of two halves, with both teams locked at 42 after a back-and-forth opening period. The second half, however, belonged entirely to the visiting Red Storm, who held Butler to just 28 points after the break while maintaining their own offensive efficiency to secure the road win and improve to 10-5 overall. Butler fell to 10-6.
The most important part of the game was Saint John’s transformative defensive pressure, which completely stifled the Bulldogs’ offense in the second half. After a first half where Butler shot efficiently and committed only a handful of turnovers, the Red Storm ratcheted up their intensity. They forced 20 Butler turnovers for the game, with 12 coming via steals, and converted those miscues into 22 points. This disruptive defense was the engine of a decisive 16-2 run early in the second half that turned a 48-48 tie into a 64-50 Saint John’s lead, a margin the Bulldogs would never seriously threaten.
Saint John’s was led by a powerful inside-outside combination. Zuby Ejiofor, a 6-foot-9 forward from Garland, Texas, dominated the paint with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding two assists, a block and a steal in 29 minutes. His physical presence was felt on both ends. Alongside him, Bryce Hopkins of Oak Park, Illinois, provided a critical scoring punch off the bench, contributing 17 points in just 24 minutes, including a key three-pointer and several baskets during the game-breaking run.
Butler, which had fought valiantly in the first half behind the scoring of Finley Bizjack, could not sustain its rhythm against the Red Storm’s relentless defense. Bizjack, a guard from Trophy Club, Texas, finished with a game-high 21 points, but 15 of those came before halftime. Michael Ajayi of Kent, Washington, added 14 points and five assists for the Bulldogs, but also accounted for six of his team’s turnovers. The Bulldogs managed only three assists as a team for the entire game, a stark indicator of their offensive stagnation.
Saint John’s showcased impressive balance, with four other players scoring in double figures: Oziyah Sellers had 10 points and four assists, while Lefteris Liotopoulos and Rubén Prey each added 10 points off the bench. Dillon Mitchell facilitated the offense with five assists and anchored the defense with a block and multiple rebounds.
The statistical disparity told the story of Saint John’s second-half control. The Red Storm assisted on 12 of their 33 made field goals, compared to just three for Butler. Saint John’s also parlayed its defensive effort into a significant advantage in shot attempts, taking 66 field goals to Butler’s 48, a direct result of the turnover margin and a 12-6 edge in offensive rebounds.
The victory marked a strong bounce-back for Saint John’s after a home loss to Providence this past Saturday. They will continue their Big East schedule on the road at Creighton this Saturday. Butler, which has now lost two straight conference games after falling to Villanova, looks to regroup on the road at Xavier next Wednesday.
The announced attendance was 6,523 at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. According to the Interstat ELO system, Saint John’s entered the game with a 78.8 percent probability to win. The total points scored, 154, surpassed the over/under line of 151.5.
