Preview: UC Santa Barbara at Cal State Northridge
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season Big West Conference men’s basketball matchup tips off Saturday when the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos visit the Cal State Northridge Matadors at the Matadome.
The Gauchos (9-4) enter with the stronger overall record, having won four of their last five, including a decisive 79-61 victory over Portland on Dec. 22. UCSB’s offense has shown high potential, erupting for 109 points in a win over Cal State Bakersfield earlier this month.
UC Santa Barbara is led by guard CJ Shaw, who is coming off a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists against Portland. Over his last four games, Shaw is averaging 9.3 points and 7.0 assists.
The Matadors (8-7) look to rebound after opening conference play with an 80-89 loss at UC Davis on Thursday. Cal State Northridge had won five of six prior to that defeat, showcasing an explosive offense that has scored at least 88 points in five games this season.
Cal State Northridge’s catalyst is guard Josiah Davis, who scored 21 points with six rebounds and four assists in the loss to UC Davis. In his last six contests, Davis is averaging 14.7 points and 6.8 assists, including a 22-point, 10-assist performance in a win over Sacramento State.
The matchup features a contrast in styles: UCSB seeks consistent execution, while CSUN relies on a fast-paced attack. The Gauchos will aim to control the tempo, while the Matadors will try to leverage their home court to push the pace and ignite their scoring.
This game marks the conference opener for UC Santa Barbara. Following this contest, the Gauchos host UC Davis on Jan. 8. Cal State Northridge continues its homestand against Cal Poly on Jan. 8.
Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, in Los Angeles.
