UNLV Dominates Air Force in Mountain West Matchup

LAS VEGAS (Interstat) — The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels used a dominant defensive performance and a commanding early run to cruise past the Air Force Falcons 67-39 in a Mountain West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.

A crowd of 6,321 watched as UNLV improved to 7-6 overall, while Air Force fell to 3-11.

The most important part of the game was its decisive start. UNLV established control from the opening tip, holding Air Force scoreless for nearly the first four minutes while building a quick 8-0 lead. The Falcons struggled to find any offensive rhythm against UNLV’s length and activity, a theme that persisted throughout the night. The Runnin’ Rebels’ early burst, fueled by interior scoring and defensive stops, set a tone of physical superiority from which Air Force never recovered.

UNLV’s defense was the story, holding Air Force to a frigid 27.8% shooting from the field. The Falcons connected on just 3 of 19 attempts from three-point range and a dismal 6 of 13 from the free-throw line. The Runnin’ Rebels also controlled the glass, outrebounding Air Force 15-7 on the offensive end, which led to a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Offensively, UNLV was led by a balanced effort. Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn scored 12 points in 28 minutes, while Tyrin Jones added 14 points and two blocks. Howie Fleming contributed 10 points and three assists, and Issac Williamson also chipped in 10 points. The Runnin’ Rebels shot 43.3% from the field and dished out 15 assists on 26 made baskets.

Air Force, which scored 20 points in the first half and 19 in the second, was led by Lucas Hobin’s 11 points. Caleb Walker added 10 points off the bench. The Falcons committed 11 turnovers, which UNLV converted into 14 points, and failed to score any fastbreak points.

The game was never in doubt after UNLV’s initial surge. The Runnin’ Rebels led 35-20 at halftime and maintained a comfortable margin throughout the second half, extending the lead as high as 28 points before settling for the 28-point victory.

The win moves UNLV above .500 as it prepares for a conference road trip. Air Force continues to search for consistency amid a challenging season.
