Iowa Holds Off UCLA Rally in Big Ten Clash
IOWA CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first-half performance and a relentless closing effort from its star guard, the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the UCLA Bruins 74-61 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Saturday at a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A crowd of 12,657 watched as Iowa, improving to 12-2, built an 18-point halftime lead and then weathered a spirited second-half push from the Bruins behind a career-high 27 points from junior guard Bennett Stirtz. UCLA, which fell to 10-4, could not overcome its frigid perimeter shooting and a significant disparity at the free-throw line.
The most critical phase of the contest was its opening 20 minutes. Iowa seized control with a 17-2 run midway through the first half, transforming a 9-6 lead into a commanding 26-8 advantage. The surge was fueled by a combination of stifling defense and efficient offense. UCLA missed 10 consecutive field goal attempts during the stretch, committing four turnovers that Iowa converted into easy baskets.
Stirtz, a 6-foot-4 guard from Liberty, Missouri, was the catalyst, scoring 11 points during the run and orchestrating the offense. His backcourt partner, Spanish sophomore Alvaro Folgueiras, added a pair of crucial three-pointers. The Hawkeyes shot 50 percent from the field in the half and capitalized on UCLA’s mistakes, while the Bruins managed only 22 points on 32 percent shooting, including 1 of 9 from three-point range. The half ended with Iowa leading 40-22, a margin built largely at the free-throw line where Iowa was a perfect 10-for-10.
UCLA emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity, opening the second half on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to eight points. Guard Donovan Dent, who led the Bruins with 25 points, spearheaded the comeback attempt, attacking the rim repeatedly. UCLA’s pressure forced seven Iowa turnovers in the first eight minutes of the half, fueling their transition game and generating 11 fast-break points.
However, each time UCLA threatened, Iowa had an answer, primarily from Stirtz. His driving layup and free throw halted the initial Bruin run. Later, after a Trent Perry three-pointer brought UCLA within 53-47 with just over eight minutes remaining, Stirtz responded with a tough jump shot and a pair of free throws to push the lead back to double digits. UCLA would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Iowa’s ability to draw fouls and convert at the line proved decisive. The Hawkeyes attempted 26 free throws, making 22, while UCLA went to the line only 12 times, making eight. Iowa also won the battle for extra possessions, securing 11 offensive rebounds to UCLA’s nine.
Beyond Stirtz’s 27 points and five assists, Iowa received significant contributions from its frontcourt. Folgueiras finished with 13 points, two assists and two blocks, providing a critical inside-outside threat. Forward Tavion Banks added 10 points and a key block in 19 minutes off the bench. For UCLA, Dent’s 25 points and five assists were a bright spot, and forward Tyler Bilodeau battled for 10 points, but the Bruins’ supporting offense struggled. UCLA shot just 3 of 14 from three-point range and committed 12 turnovers.
The game, organized by the Big Ten Conference, served as a high-profile test for both teams ahead of their conference slates. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Iowa entered with a 66.2 percent probability to win, a projection borne out by their efficient offensive rating of 120.6 points per 100 possessions, compared to UCLA’s 94.3.
Iowa will open its Big Ten schedule on the road Tuesday at Minnesota. UCLA, now facing a two-game losing streak after a December 13 defeat at Gonzaga, continues a challenging road trip at Wisconsin on Tuesday.
