BYU at Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (Interstat) — A surging BYU squad, boasting one of the nation’s most potent offenses, faces a Kansas State team looking to solidify its resume in a key early Big 12 Conference clash Saturday at Bramlage Coliseum.

The Cougars (11-1) enter conference play with the league’s best non-conference record, fueled by a high-scoring attack averaging 88.2 points per game. Their lone blemish is a two-point road loss to then-Connecticut in November. Since then, BYU has won seven straight, including a 109-81 rout of Eastern Washington on Dec. 22 where they shot 58% from the field.

BYU is led by star freshman AJ Dybantsa, who is averaging 29.0 points and 5.8 assists over his last five games. He posted a 33-point, 10-assist double-double in the win over Eastern Washington. He is supported by a balanced lineup featuring Richie Saunders (22 points in last game) and Robert Wright (17 points, 7 assists).

Kansas State (9-4) seeks a statement victory to bolster its postseason prospects. The Wildcats have won three straight, including a 94-85 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Dec. 28, but own a 1-3 record against major conference opponents this season. Their defense, allowing 78.2 points per game, will be severely tested.

The Wildcats counter with guard PJ Haggerty, who is averaging 19.4 points per game. He scored 24 points with eight rebounds in the win over Louisiana-Monroe. Forward Nate Johnson adds a versatile threat, coming off a 14-point, 6-rebound, 4-assist performance.

Historically, Kansas State holds a 4-2 advantage in the series, but this marks BYU’s first visit to Manhattan as a Big 12 member. The Cougars’ offensive efficiency, ranking third nationally in field goal percentage (52.4%), contrasts sharply with a Kansas State defense that has allowed opponents to shoot 45.1%.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. CST and will be televised on ESPN2. For BYU, it is the start of a brutal January schedule. Kansas State opens a two-game road trip to Arizona next week.
