Mississippi State at Texas

AUSTIN, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Longhorns, looking to build momentum for a rugged Southeastern Conference slate, host the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the Frank Erwin Center.

Texas (9-4) enters on a two-game winning streak, including a 94-71 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 22. The Longhorns have been dominant at home, winning all seven contests in Austin this season by an average of 30.1 points. A key to that success has been the efficient play of forward Matas Vokietaitis, who is averaging 18.8 points over his last four games. He scored 28 points in just 24 minutes in a win over Southern on Dec. 8.

Mississippi State (7-5) has won three of its last four, most recently a 71-66 home victory over Memphis on Dec. 20. The Bulldogs are seeking a signature road win, having lost their only true road game at Iowa State in November. Guard Jayden Epps has been on a scoring tear, averaging 20.0 points over the last four contests. He led the Bulldogs with 19 points in the win over Memphis.

While both teams boast potent offenses, defense may tell the tale. Texas has held opponents to 38.8% shooting at home. Mississippi State, however, has shown resilience in close games, with two overtime wins and several tight victories during its recent run.

This game serves as a final tune-up before both teams dive into demanding SEC schedules. Texas opens conference play at Tennessee on Tuesday, while Mississippi State hosts Oklahoma next Wednesday.

The Longhorns will aim to leverage their home-court advantage and interior presence, while the Bulldogs will rely on Epps’ backcourt scoring and their experience in gritty, late-game situations. Tipoff is set for Saturday afternoon.
