Bryant Holds Off Maine Rally for America East Road Win

VEZAIE, Maine (Interstat) — In a contest defined more by grit than grace, the Bryant Bulldogs survived a furious second-half rally from the Maine Black Bears to escape the Cross Insurance Center with a 56-51 victory in America East Conference men’s basketball on Saturday.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,131, was a tale of two starkly different halves. Bryant, the visiting team, established a commanding early lead with stifling defense, holding Maine to just 17 first-half points and taking a 26-17 advantage into the break. The Bulldogs’ length and activity, particularly from forwards Ashley Sims and Quincy Allen, disrupted Maine’s offensive flow, forcing 12 first-half turnovers and limiting the Black Bears to a single field goal over the opening nine minutes.

The most important part of the game, however, was Maine’s determined response after halftime. Sparked by sophomore forward TJ Biel of Calgary, Canada, the Black Bears roared to life. Biel, who finished with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists, scored 16 of his points in the second half. His personal 7-0 run, capped by a stepback jumper and a 3-pointer assisted by Ryan Mabrey, brought Maine within a single possession at 39-36 with just over seven minutes remaining.

Maine’s surge transformed a sluggish affair into a tense, back-and-forth battle down the stretch. The Black Bears, who scored 34 points in the second period, finally pulled even at 50-50 on a Logan Carey free throw with 3:28 left. Carey, from Shelton, Connecticut, contributed six points, six rebounds and three assists, providing crucial energy.

But Bryant, which improved to 5-10 overall, demonstrated a resilience that has been inconsistent this season. After seeing their once-comfortable lead evaporate, the Bulldogs made the necessary plays in the final minutes. A driving layup by guard Ty Tabales of Worcester, Massachusetts, put Bryant back ahead 52-50. Following a defensive stop, the Bulldogs worked the ball inside to Sims, who was fouled and made one of two free throws to extend the lead to three with 1:43 remaining.

Maine, which fell to 2-13, had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final 90 seconds but came up empty on several contested attempts near the rim. Bryant’s Aaron Davis, a 6-foot-7 guard from Bay Shore, New York, secured a critical defensive rebound after an Ace Flagg miss with under a minute to go. After a Bryant turnover gave Maine one last chance, Biel was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 21 seconds left but could only make one of three free throws, leaving the Black Bears down 54-51. Bryant’s Jakai Robinson then sealed the game by making two free throws with 12 seconds remaining.

Bryant’s victory was anchored by its frontcourt. Ashley Sims, a 6-foot-8 forward from Glen Burnie, Maryland, posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Quincy Allen, a 6-foot-8 forward from Silver Spring, Maryland, was even more impactful, recording 12 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, providing a defensive presence that helped stymie Maine’s initial efforts. Aaron Davis added 13 points for the Bulldogs, while Tabales finished with 12 points and five assists.

For Maine, Biel’s standout performance was supported by nine points from Ryan Mabrey of Belmar, New Jersey. The Black Bears’ second-half explosion, which saw them shoot significantly better from the field, ultimately fell short due to their first-half deficit and key missed opportunities in the closing moments.

The game’s final score of 107 total points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 128, a testament to the defensive struggles that plagued both teams for long stretches. Bryant, which had been a 1.5-point favorite according to pregame odds, covered the spread with the five-point victory. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs in conference play, while Maine’s search for its first America East win continues.

Bryant next hosts Massachusetts-Lowell on Thursday. Maine travels to face Maryland-Baltimore County, also on Thursday.
