Wofford at Citadel
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Interstat) — A surging Wofford team looks to continue its winning ways against a struggling Citadel squad when the Southern Conference rivals meet Saturday at McAlister Field House.
The Terriers (9-5) enter conference play having won three of their last four, including a 79-74 road victory at Western Carolina on Wednesday. The Bulldogs (3-11) have lost five straight, most recently a 74-49 home defeat to East Tennessee State on Tuesday.
The matchup pits one of the league’s most efficient offenses against its most porous defense. Wofford averages 77.6 points per game, while The Citadel allows a conference-worst 75.9 points per contest. The Terriers have scored at least 83 points in five of their nine wins this season.
Wofford is led by standout guard Nils Machowski, who is coming off a career-high 27-point, seven-rebound performance against Western Carolina. Over his last five games, Machowski is averaging 16.4 points and 3.8 assists, providing consistent scoring punch for a deep Terrier rotation that also features Cayden Vasko (18 points vs. Western Carolina) and Kahmare Holmes.
The Citadel, under first-year coach Tony Rack, has struggled to find consistent offense outside of a 98-point outburst against Division II Southern Wesleyan. Guard Carter Kingsbury leads the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game but was held to eight points in the loss to ETSU. The Bulldogs have failed to reach 60 points in four of their last five games.
Defensive intensity will be a key for The Citadel, which has forced an average of just 8.6 turnovers per game during its losing skid. Wofford, conversely, has committed 10 or fewer turnovers in three of its last four victories.
Historically, Wofford has dominated the series, winning 15 of the last 17 meetings. The Terriers swept last season’s matchups, winning 85-71 at home and 77-68 in Charleston.
Saturday’s game tips off at 1 p.m. EST and is the conference opener for both teams. Wofford next hosts UNC Greensboro on Jan. 7, while The Citadel travels to face Mercer on the same date.
