Hofstra at Drexel
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — A surging Hofstra squad will look to continue its winning ways against a struggling Drexel team as Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball play resumes Saturday at Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Pride (10-4) enter the contest having won five straight, including notable non-conference road victories at Pittsburgh and Syracuse. The Dragons (6-9), meanwhile, have lost four of their last five, most recently falling 65-53 at UNC Wilmington on Wednesday.
Hofstra’s success is fueled by guard Cruz Davis, who has been exceptional during the win streak. Over the last five games, Davis is averaging 24.4 points and 6.0 assists, including a 36-point, 7-assist effort at Pitt and a 22-point, 9-assist performance in the upset of Syracuse. He scored 22 points with 7 assists in Monday’s 86-72 win over Campbell.
Drexel will counter with guard Eli Beard, who has been a bright spot. He leads the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game in conference play, though he was held to 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting in the loss to UNCW. The Dragons have struggled offensively, failing to reach 70 points in four of their last five games.
The matchup pits one of the CAA’s most efficient offenses against one of its most challenged. Hofstra averages 77.6 points per game and shoots 48.2% from the field. Drexel averages just 68.7 points and has been held under 65 points in three of its last four contests.
Recent history in the series favors the Pride, who have won the last four meetings. In their most recent matchup last February, Hofstra secured a 79-77 victory in Philadelphia.
Saturday’s game marks the conference opener for both teams. Hofstra will look to establish itself as a CAA frontrunner, while Drexel aims to reverse its fortunes and defend its home court. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. EST.
