Liberty Holds Off Kennesaw State in Conference USA Opener
LYNCHBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Zach Cleveland scored 20 points and Liberty used a dominant first-half performance to build a substantial lead before holding off a persistent Kennesaw State rally for an 81-73 victory in a Conference USA men’s basketball game Friday night at Vines Center.
The Flames (10-3, 1-0 CUSA) shot a blistering 60% from the field in the opening period, racing to a 46-33 halftime advantage that proved too much for the Owls (8-5, 0-1) to overcome despite a spirited second-half effort. The game’s most critical stretch came immediately after the opening tip, as Liberty unleashed a 17-2 run over the first five minutes, establishing a tone of offensive efficiency and defensive disruption that Kennesaw State could never fully counter.
Cleveland, a 6-foot-7 forward from Bloomington, Illinois, was instrumental throughout, adding three assists and three blocks in 32 minutes. His interior presence, combined with Liberty’s eight total blocks, repeatedly thwarted Kennesaw State’s attempts to score in the paint. The Flames’ backcourt provided ample support, with Colin Porter scoring 18 points and dishing out three assists, and Kaden Metheny contributing 10 points and four assists.
The Owls, who entered the game having won five of their last six, were led by Simeon Cottle’s game-high 22 points. The guard from College Park, Georgia, also had four assists but was forced into a difficult shooting night, making just 8 of 22 attempts from the field as Liberty’s defense consistently challenged his looks. Darius Washington facilitated the offense with nine assists, while Ramone Seals added 13 points.
Liberty’s early explosion was a clinic in offensive execution. The Flames hit seven of their first nine shots, including three-pointers from JJ Harper and Brett Decker, while simultaneously forcing four Kennesaw State turnovers in the first four minutes. Harper’s layup just 14 seconds into the contest opened the scoring, and Cleveland’s layup at the 19:12 mark capped the initial 9-0 spurt that prompted an urgent Kennesaw State timeout.
The Owls struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Liberty’s active defense, starting the game 1 for 9 from the floor. Even when Kennesaw State managed to string together a few baskets, Liberty had an immediate answer, often from Cleveland in the post or from Porter in transition. A three-pointer from Porter with 11:45 left in the half pushed the lead to 26-15, and the Flames maintained a double-digit cushion for nearly the remainder of the period, leading by as many as 16.
Kennesaw State’s resilience surfaced after halftime. The Owls opened the second half with a 9-2 run, keyed by five points from Cottle, to trim the deficit to 48-42 with 17:30 remaining. The Flames’ offense, so fluid in the first half, went cold, missing six of their first seven shots of the period.
Liberty steadied itself behind its defense. With the lead shaved to six, the Flames forced three consecutive empty Kennesaw State possessions, and Cleveland scored on a hook shot and a dunk in a 90-second span to push the advantage back to 63-53 with just over six minutes to play. The Owls made one final push, closing to within 70-65 on a Ramone Seals three-pointer with 4:22 left, but could get no closer. Liberty sealed the game at the free-throw line, making 11 of 14 attempts in the final 3:49.
The statistical disparity told the story of Liberty’s control. The Flames finished the game shooting 50.9% (27 of 53) from the field and 38.1% (8 of 21) from three-point range, while Kennesaw State was held to 33.8% shooting (27 of 80) and 27.8% (10 of 36) from beyond the arc. Liberty’s efficiency was stark, scoring 81 points on just 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 111.9. Kennesaw State, despite securing a massive 21 offensive rebounds, managed only 73 points on 78 possessions, an offensive rating of 93.4.
Liberty also enjoyed a significant advantage at the foul line, making 19 of 24 attempts compared to Kennesaw State’s 9 of 13. Decker finished with 13 points for the Flames, while Harper added 12 points, three blocks, and two assists.
Amir Taylor provided a boost off the bench for Kennesaw State with nine points in 15 minutes. The Owls’ effort on the glass, where they outrebounded Liberty 44-31 overall, kept them within striking distance but they could not overcome their poor shooting and 13 turnovers.
The announced attendance was 3,415. Liberty next hosts Jacksonville State on Sunday, while Kennesaw State travels to face Delaware.
