Purdue Dominates Kent State in Nonconference Finale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming efficiency and depth, the Purdue Boilermakers delivered a commanding 101-60 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes in a nonconference men’s basketball game Monday night at a sold-out Mackey Arena.

The 12th-ranked Boilermakers, improving to 12-1, never trailed and turned a dominant first half into a second-half rout, showcasing why they are considered one of the nation’s elite teams. The Golden Flashes, who entered with a 10-2 record, saw their four-game winning streak snapped decisively.

Purdue’s offensive execution was nearly flawless from the outset. The Boilermakers shot 56% from the field, connected on 12 of 31 three-point attempts, and were a stellar 17 of 19 from the free-throw line. Their offensive rating of 134.6 points per 100 possessions underscored a clinic in shot selection and ball movement, which yielded 10 assists against just eight turnovers. Defensively, they were equally disruptive, forcing 14 Kent State turnovers and converting them into easy transition opportunities.

The most important stretch of the game came early, effectively deciding the contest before the first media timeout. After a slow start from both teams, Purdue ignited a 15-0 run that transformed a 2-2 tie into a 17-2 lead, a deficit from which Kent State never recovered. The sequence was fueled by stifling defense and a seamless offensive flow. It began with a Braden Smith stepback jumper, followed by consecutive assists from Smith to Trey Kaufman-Renn for inside scores. Fletcher Loyer then stripped Kent State’s Delrecco Gillespie and immediately buried a three-pointer off another Smith assist. Just over three minutes into the game, the Boilermakers had established a tone of defensive intensity and unselfish offense that would last the entire night.

Kent State, which shot just 34% overall and 26% from beyond the arc, struggled to find any consistent offense against Purdue’s size and defensive pressure. The Golden Flashes managed only 27 points in the first half, while Purdue poured in 51, taking a 24-point lead into the break. The Boilermakers’ lead ballooned to as many as 43 points in the second half as their bench extended the advantage.

Purdue’s attack was balanced and potent. Sophomore guard Jack Benter led all scorers with 20 points in just 15 minutes off the bench, hitting four three-pointers. Fletcher Loyer added 19 points, while Braden Smith orchestrated the offense with 12 points and eight assists. Trey Kaufman-Renn provided a strong interior presence with 15 points and seven rebounds. Ten different Boilermakers scored, including 11 points from 7-foot-4 center Daniel Jacobsen.

For Kent State, Jahari Williamson scored 10 points, and Delrecco Gillespie added nine points and three steals, but the Golden Flashes were simply overmatched. They were outrebounded and nearly doubled in assists, highlighting the disparity in offensive execution.

The game drew a crowd of 14,876 to Mackey Arena. Purdue entered as a heavy favorite, with statistical models giving them a 96% chance to win, and they covered the 23.5-point spread with ease. The combined score of 161 points went under the pregame over/under line of 158.5.

With the victory, Purdue now looks ahead to the start of Big Ten Conference play, traveling to face Wisconsin on Saturday. Kent State, which fell to 10-3, will aim to regroup as it opens Mid-American Conference action at home against Northern Illinois on Saturday.
