West Virginia Rolls Past Mississippi Valley State in Nonconference Finale

STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) — In a game that was decided from its opening moments, the West Virginia Mountaineers delivered a dominant wire-to-wire performance, overwhelming the visiting Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils 86-51 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Monday night at a festive WVU Coliseum.

A crowd of 10,234 watched as West Virginia (9-4) used a blistering first-half offensive display to build an insurmountable lead, shooting 50% from the field and connecting on 7 of 15 three-point attempts before halftime to take a 42-22 advantage into the break. The Mountaineers never relented, extending their lead throughout the second half to cruise to their ninth victory of the season.

The most important part of the game was West Virginia’s immediate and sustained offensive execution, which rendered any notion of an upset impossible within minutes. The Mountaineers opened the contest with a 14-2 run, highlighted by early three-pointers from Honor Huff and Jasper Floyd, and never allowed the Delta Devils to establish any defensive rhythm. Mississippi Valley State (1-12), struggling through a difficult nonconference schedule, was held to 34% shooting for the game and made only one of its nine attempts from beyond the arc. The Delta Devils’ sole bright spot was a perfect 14-for-14 performance at the free throw line.

West Virginia’s offensive efficiency was staggering. The Mountaineers scored 86 points on just 62 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 139.7, while Mississippi Valley State managed an offensive rating of just 87.0. West Virginia’s inside-out attack was potent, outscoring the Delta Devils 36-22 in the paint while also capitalizing on 12 three-pointers. They also turned six Mississippi Valley State turnovers into 11 points.

Treysen Eaglestaff led all scorers with 23 points for West Virginia, showcasing his versatility with a mix of drives and perimeter shooting, including three three-pointers. The 6-foot-6 guard from Bismarck, North Dakota, added two assists and a block in 32 minutes. He was complemented by a strong interior presence from 7-foot center Harlan Obioha, who scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, five of them offensive.

Guard Honor Huff, from Brooklyn, New York, added 13 points, all in the first half, and dished out two assists. Forward DJ Thomas contributed 11 points off the bench. The Mountaineers’ ball movement was crisp, resulting in 23 assists on 30 made field goals, with Brenen Lorient leading the way with five assists to go with his eight points.

Mississippi Valley State, which fell to 1-12, was led by Michael James with 14 points. The guard from Byhalia, Mississippi, played a team-high 36 minutes. X’Zaevion Barnett added nine points for the Delta Devils, who have now lost 12 consecutive games against Division I opponents since a season-opening win over MUW, an NAIA program.

The game’s statistical disparity was comprehensive. West Virginia shot 53.6% from the field compared to Mississippi Valley State’s 34%. The Mountaineers won the rebounding battle 36-28 and committed only six turnovers. The Delta Devils did manage eight fast-break points to West Virginia’s one and recorded five steals, but could not overcome their frigid shooting night.

The victory allowed West Virginia to rebound from a double-overtime road loss to Ohio State in its previous outing and provided momentum heading into Big 12 Conference play. The Mountaineers open their conference schedule on the road at Iowa State on Jan. 2. Mississippi Valley State, which has faced a gauntlet of power-conference opponents this season, continues its difficult road trip at Oklahoma on Dec. 29 before opening Southwestern Athletic Conference play at home on Jan. 3 against Alabama State.

West Virginia covered the pregame spread as a 41-point favorite, and the total score of 137 landed just under the over/under line of 135.5. The Mountaineers’ performance aligned with pregame analytics that gave them a 99.9% probability to win.
