Siena at Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vt. (Interstat) — A surging Siena men’s basketball team, boasting one of the nation’s best records, puts its seven-game winning streak on the line Wednesday afternoon against a Vermont squad looking to build momentum at home.
The Saints (9-2) visit the Catamounts (7-5) in a non-conference matchup at Roy L. Patrick Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Siena has not lost since Nov. 17, with its streak featuring both dominant victories and gritty road wins. Their most recent outing was a 74-52 rout of Canisius on Dec. 7, where Antonio Chandler led with 16 points.
The engine for Siena’s success has been guard Justice Shoats, who has been a model of consistency and playmaking. Over the last seven games, Shoats has averaged 14.9 points and 6.0 assists, including a 22-point, 5-assist effort at Holy Cross and a 15-point, 8-assist performance against Niagara.
Vermont, the perennial America East Conference power, has faced a tougher early schedule and seeks stability. The Catamounts snapped a two-game skid with a 66-59 home win over Merrimack on Sunday. Forward Noah Barnett was pivotal in that victory, scoring 16 points and grabbing five rebounds. He and backcourt leader Sean Blake (14 points, 5 assists vs. Merrimack) are key figures for Vermont’s attack.
The Catamounts have proven formidable at home, going 4-1 in Burlington this season, with the lone loss a narrow 77-74 defeat to Yale. They will need that home-court advantage against a Siena team that is 3-0 in true road games.
This contest serves as a final tune-up for both before brief holiday breaks. Siena travels to face Indiana on Dec. 22, while Vermont hosts Iona on Dec. 20.
Wednesday’s game hinges on Vermont’s ability to disrupt Shoats’ rhythm and leverage its interior presence against a Saints team playing with high confidence. The matchup offers Siena a chance to add a quality road win to its resume and provides Vermont an opportunity to secure a statement victory against a hot opponent.
