Florida State at Dayton
DAYTON, Ohio (Interstat) — The Dayton Flyers, riding high at 8-2, will look to continue their strong non-conference play when they host the struggling Florida State Seminoles on Tuesday night at University of Dayton Arena.
The Flyers have won six of their last seven games, including an 84-61 rout of North Florida last Saturday. A key catalyst has been sophomore guard De’Shayne Montgomery, who erupted for 23 points in just 20 minutes in that victory. Montgomery is averaging 18.8 points over his last five contests, providing a consistent scoring punch for a Dayton team that has defended its home court with a 5-1 record this season.
They will face a Florida State team (5-5) seeking to halt a four-game skid. The Seminoles are coming off a 103-95 home loss to Massachusetts on Saturday, a game in which their defense again faltered. During the losing streak, Florida State has allowed an average of 96.8 points per game.
The Seminoles’ hope rests largely with dynamic guard Robert McCray. Despite the team’s losses, McCray has been brilliant, averaging 19.3 points and 8.3 assists over the last three games. He posted a 21-point, 11-assist double-double against UMass. His ability to penetrate and create will be critical against a stout Dayton defense.
Dayton’s frontcourt, featuring Malcolm Thomas and Amael L’Etang who combined for 28 points and six blocks against North Florida, will pose a significant challenge for a Florida State interior that has been outmatched recently.
This game represents a final major non-conference test for Dayton before Atlantic 10 play begins. For Florida State, it is a crucial opportunity to secure a quality road win and find momentum before entering the gauntlet of ACC competition later this month.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Tuesday. Dayton will host Liberty on Saturday, while Florida State returns home to face Mississippi Valley State on Friday.
