Salukis Dominate Paint, Cruise Past Skyhawks in Nonconference Tilt
CARBONDALE, Ill. (Interstat) — Southern Illinois turned a tight first half into a decisive second-half rout, overwhelming Tennessee-Martin with a dominant defensive performance to secure an 83-54 victory in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at SIU Arena.
A crowd of 4,021 watched the Salukis (6-4) clamp down on the Skyhawks (7-3) after halftime, using a 20-4 run early in the second period to break open what had been a seven-point game at the intermission. Southern Illinois outscored Tennessee-Martin 49-27 after the break, fueled by relentless ball pressure that generated 12 steals and forced 18 total turnovers, which it converted into 25 points.
The game’s pivotal sequence began with Southern Illinois leading 38-31. Over the next five minutes, the Salukis unleashed the decisive run. It started with a Jalen Haynes three-pointer and a layup, followed by a pair of free throws from Davion Sykes. Haynes then completed a three-point play, and Sykes added two more free throws. A driving layup by Sykes and a three-pointer from Damien Mayo capped the burst, extending the lead to 58-35 with 11:48 remaining and effectively ending the contest.
Sykes, a 6-foot-6 guard from Duncanville, Texas, led all scorers with 17 points in just 23 minutes, showcasing efficient offense and active defense. Quel’Ron House, a 6-foot guard from Louisville, Kentucky, orchestrated the attack with 12 points and six assists. Haynes added 12 points, while Mayo contributed nine points and five assists. The Salukis’ defensive anchor, 7-foot center Max Pikaar of Leiden, Netherlands, chipped in eight points, two blocks and two steals.
Tennessee-Martin, which entered the game having won seven of its last eight, never found an offensive rhythm. The Skyhawks shot just 33.9% from the field and 25% from three-point range. They were led by Matas Deniusas of Vilnius, Lithuania, and Andrija Bukumirović of Sjenica, Serbia, who each scored nine points. Afan Trnka of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, added seven points, three assists and two blocks.
Southern Illinois’s offensive efficiency was stark, scoring 83 points on 72 possessions for a rating of 115.3, while Tennessee-Martin managed only 54 points on 71 possessions for a rating of 76.4. The Salukis also dominated inside, outscoring the Skyhawks 46-20 in the paint and shooting 57.1% from the field overall.
The first half was a sloppy, competitive affair featuring 21 combined turnovers. Tennessee-Martin kept pace early, with a three-pointer from Trnka tying the game at 14 with 11:07 left. Southern Illinois responded with an 8-0 run, keyed by a Pikaar three-pointer and five quick points from Sykes, to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Salukis took a 34-27 advantage into halftime despite committing 10 turnovers.
Any hope of a Skyhawks comeback was extinguished by Southern Illinois’s stifling defense to open the second half. The Salukis held Tennessee-Martin without a field goal for over four minutes during the game-breaking run, consistently turning defense into easy transition opportunities.
Southern Illinois, which was an 11-point pregame favorite, covered the spread as the total score of 137 fell well under the over/under line of 151. The Salukis will travel to face Richmond on Saturday. Tennessee-Martin returns home to host Champion Christian on Sunday.
