Bonnies Rally From 13-Point Deficit, Down Colgate in Second Half
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — A dominant second-half surge, fueled by relentless interior scoring and a decisive advantage at the free-throw line, propelled Saint Bonaventure to an 85-77 comeback victory over Colgate in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a raucous Reilly Center.
The Bonnies, improving to 10-1, weathered a blistering first-half shooting display from the visiting Raiders before overwhelming them after halftime. Colgate, which fell to 6-5, saw a 13-point halftime lead evaporate under a wave of Saint Bonaventure paint points and transition opportunities.
The most critical phase of the contest came in the opening ten minutes of the second half, a period that saw the game’s momentum irrevocably shift. After trailing 47-34 at intermission, Saint Bonaventure emerged from the locker room with heightened defensive intensity and a clear offensive directive. The Bonnies opened the second stanza on a 23-6 run, completely flipping the script. During this pivotal stretch, they consistently attacked the basket, drawing fouls and converting high-percentage shots. The run was emblematic of the entire half, where Saint Bonaventure outscored Colgate 51-30.
Saint Bonaventure’s offense was a model of efficiency, scoring 85 points on just 75 possessions for an offensive rating of 112.7. They shot 31 of 65 from the field but made their living inside the arc and at the charity stripe. The Bonnies attempted 24 free throws, making 19, while Colgate managed only 10 makes on 19 attempts. This 14-point disparity at the line proved insurmountable for the Raiders.
Colgate’s first half was a showcase for its star backcourt. Jalen Cox, a junior from Los Angeles, and Andrew Alekseyenko, a senior from Brookline, Massachusetts, combined for 31 points before the break, propelling the Raiders to a 47-point half on 56% shooting. Cox finished with a game-high 26 points and seven assists in 36 minutes, while Alekseyenko added 25 points.
Their efforts, however, were met and surpassed by a balanced and powerful Bonnies attack. Cayden Charles led Saint Bonaventure with 20 points, including several crucial drives during the second-half rally. Frank Mitchell, a physical force from Toronto, muscled his way to 19 points and a game-high nine offensive rebounds, providing constant second-chance opportunities. Darryl Simmons added 17 points, and Dasonte Bowen orchestrated the offense with nine assists to go with 15 points.
The Bonnies’ defense stiffened considerably after halftime, holding Colgate to 30 points on 10-of-33 shooting. The Raiders, who hit five three-pointers in the first half, went 0-for-9 from deep in the second. Saint Bonaventure also won the turnover battle, forcing 12 Colgate miscues while committing only six of their own in the final 20 minutes.
Colgate’s early success was built on sharp ball movement and hot shooting, leading by as many as 15 points in the first half. But the Bonnies closed the period on a 9-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 13, a harbinger of the onslaught to come. Once Saint Bonaventure established its interior presence and began converting free throws, Colgate had no consistent counter.
The game’s statistical profile highlighted the contrasting paths to scoring. Both teams made 31 field goals and struggled from three-point range, with Colgate hitting 5 of 21 and Saint Bonaventure 4 of 19. The disparity in free-throw volume and execution, coupled with Saint Bonaventure’s 13 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second-chance points, formed the foundation of the comeback.
Saint Bonaventure, which entered as a heavy favorite according to advanced metrics and betting lines, saw its pregame probability of 92.8% tested severely in the first half before its depth and physicality prevailed. The total score of 162 points sailed over the pregame over/under line of 141.5.
The announced attendance of 3,049 at the Reilly Center witnessed a tale of two halves, with the home team delivering a performance after halftime that underscored its strong start to the season. Saint Bonaventure now looks ahead to a neutral-site game against Ohio in Cleveland on Saturday. Colgate, after a three-game winning streak was snapped, will regroup before a challenging road trip to face Florida on Dec. 21.
