Purdue Routs Minnesota in Big Ten Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — Braden Smith orchestrated a dominant second-half surge, finishing with 15 points and 12 assists, as Purdue pulled away from Minnesota for an 85-57 victory in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Mackey Arena.

The game’s decisive turning point came early in the second half when the Boilermakers, leading by just three points at halftime, unleashed a blistering 20-5 run over a five-minute span. Smith was the catalyst, dishing out four assists and scoring five points during the burst that transformed a 39-35 contest into a 59-40 Purdue command. The Golden Gophers never recovered, as the Boilermakers’ offensive efficiency and defensive pressure intensified before a crowd of 14,876.

Purdue improved to 9-1 overall and evened its early conference record, while Minnesota fell to 5-5.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Minnesota’s Jaylen Crocker-Johnson scoring 11 of his team-high 17 points to keep the Gophers within 35-32 at the break. Purdue’s interior presence, however, was established early by Oscar Cluff and Trey Kaufman-Renn, who combined for 18 first-half points.

Any hope for a Minnesota upset evaporated quickly after halftime. Smith found Cluff for an easy layup to start the half, then, after a Minnesota miss, hit CJ Cox for a three-pointer. Following a Golden Gophers timeout, Smith stole the ball and set up Fletcher Loyer for a transition layup. The sequence typified the half, as Smith repeatedly carved up the Minnesota defense, either finding open shooters or attacking the rim himself.

Purdue’s balanced attack overwhelmed the visitors. Alongside Smith’s double-double, Cluff finished with 14 points, Kaufman-Renn added 14, and Loyer chipped in 10. The Boilermakers’ size advantage was magnified by 7-foot-4 reserve Daniel Jacobsen, who contributed 11 points and four blocked shots in just 21 minutes, altering countless other attempts.

Minnesota, which shot poorly from the field throughout the night, was led by Crocker-Johnson’s 17 points and Cade Tyson’s 15 points and four assists. Langston Reynolds added 11 points. The Gophers’ offense stagnated against Purdue’s heightened defensive effort in the second period, managing only 25 points after the break while Purdue poured in 50.

The Boilermakers’ defensive activity, led by Smith’s four steals, generated 12 Minnesota turnovers, which Purdue converted into 18 points. Conversely, Purdue committed only six turnovers, highlighting Smith’s command of the game.

The victory served as a strong bounce-back performance for Purdue following a 23-point home loss to Iowa State on Saturday. For Smith, it marked a return to form after being held to 11 points in that defeat. Minnesota, coming off a home win over Indiana, could not sustain its momentum on the road against one of the conference’s top contenders.

Purdue now looks ahead to a major non-conference test against Marquette on Saturday. Minnesota returns home to face Texas Southern on Sunday.
