Northern Colorado Routs Air Force for Fifth Straight Win

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a commanding road performance, the Northern Colorado Bears used a decisive second-half surge to defeat the Air Force Falcons 71-53 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Clune Arena.

The victory improved Northern Colorado’s record to 6-1 on the young season, while Air Force fell to 3-5.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the Bears holding a narrow 28-24 lead at the break before pulling away after halftime. Northern Colorado’s offense exploded for 43 points in the second period, consistently finding answers for any brief Falcon rallies. The Bears’ efficiency was the story of the game, as they scored 71 points on 62 possessions for an offensive rating of 114.9. Air Force, by contrast, managed just 53 points on 60 possessions, an offensive rating of 88.9.

Northern Colorado’s offensive success was built on superior shooting from the field, particularly from beyond the arc. The Bears connected on 28 of 52 field goal attempts, a 53.8 percent clip, and shot 10 for 24 from three-point range. Air Force was held to 21 of 51 shooting, or 41.2 percent, and struggled immensely from deep, making only 3 of 17 three-point attempts.

The Bears also won the battle in key hustle categories, scoring 13 points off turnovers compared to just five for the Falcons, and registering five fastbreak points to Air Force’s two. Both teams committed eight turnovers, but Northern Colorado capitalized more effectively on the opportunities presented.

The individual standout was Northern Colorado guard Quinn Denker, who orchestrated the offense with a game-high 23 points and eight assists in 38 minutes of action. His backcourt mate, Zach Bloch, added 11 points, including three shots from long distance.

Inside, forward Brock Wisne provided a dominant presence for the Bears, scoring 20 points on efficient shooting and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. His size and activity in the paint were constant challenges for the Air Force defense.

The Falcons were led by Kam Sanders, who scored 16 points. Wesley Celichowski provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and two blocks, while AJ Patterson also chipped in eight points. The Falcons’ offense, however, lacked fluidity for long stretches, evidenced by their mere two total assists as a team.

Air Force managed to keep the game close early, with the first half featuring six ties and five lead changes. The Falcons took a brief 12-10 lead after a dunk from Patterson forced a Northern Colorado timeout. The Bears responded, however, and closed the half on an 8-2 run to take their four-point lead into the locker room.

Any hopes of an Air Force comeback were quickly extinguished in the second half. Northern Colorado opened the period with a 14-2 run, fueled by three-pointers from Denker and Bloch, to stretch their lead to 42-26. The Falcons never recovered from that initial blow, as the Bears’ lead ballooned to as many as 21 points down the stretch. Air Force could not mount a sustained run, with every small basket answered by the steady and efficient Northern Colorado offense.

The Bears’ defense was equally instrumental in the victory, holding the Falcons to 29 second-half points and disrupting their offensive sets throughout the night. Northern Colorado’s ability to convert defensive stops into offensive production on the other end proved to be the ultimate difference.

The announced attendance at Clune Arena was 1,391. Northern Colorado returns to action Saturday at home against Regis. Air Force will host South Dakota on Saturday in a game played at Rapid City, South Dakota.
