Siena Holds Off Albany in Crosstown Showdown
ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a rivalry game defined by a dominant first-half performance, the Siena Saints weathered a second-half surge from the Albany Great Danes to secure a 73-63 victory before a crowd of 7,024 at Times Union Center on Friday night.
Siena, the home team, improved its season record to 3-2, while Albany fell to 2-4.
The Saints seized control of the contest from the opening tip, embarking on a blistering first-half run that left the Great Danes scrambling. Siena’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, building a commanding 46-31 lead by halftime. The Saints shot a scorching 26 of 51 from the floor for the game, a 51 percent clip, and were nearly perfect from the free-throw line, converting 18 of 20 attempts.
A key factor in the first-half explosion was the play of Tasman Goodrick. The 6-foot-10 sophomore from Sydney, Australia, was a force in the paint, scoring 19 points and pulling down a game-high seven rebounds in just 27 minutes of action. His presence inside provided a consistent offensive option and helped Siena establish an early physical dominance.
Feeding Goodrick and others was the dynamic backcourt play of Justice Shoats. The guard from Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, orchestrated the Siena offense masterfully, dishing out nine assists while also contributing 14 points. His ability to penetrate and find open teammates kept the Albany defense off-balance throughout the first period.
Albany, meanwhile, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against the stout Siena defense in the opening half. The Great Danes committed 11 turnovers for the game, several of which came in the first 20 minutes and led to easy transition opportunities for the Saints.
Despite the daunting deficit, Albany refused to capitulate after the break. The Great Danes emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity, holding Siena to just 27 points in the second half. Albany’s own offense began to find cracks, scoring 32 points after halftime.
The catalyst for the Albany comeback attempt was guard Amir Lindsey. The Framingham, Massachusetts, native played all but a minute of the contest, logging a game-high 40 minutes and pouring in 23 points to go along with four assists. His relentless drives and mid-range game kept the pressure on the Siena defense as the Great Danes slowly chipped away at the lead.
Supporting Lindsey’s effort was a strong defensive presence in the paint from Okechukwu Okeke. The 6-foot-10 forward from East Chicago, Indiana, recorded three of Albany’s four blocked shots and altered numerous others, while also scoring 11 points. His rim protection was a primary reason for Siena’s second-half scoring dip.
Zach Matulu, a hometown product from Albany, also provided a spark for the Great Danes, finishing with 11 points, including several energetic plays in transition.
However, every time Albany threatened to cut the lead to single digits, Siena had an answer. Gavin Doty, a 6-foot-5 guard from Fulton, New York, was a model of consistency, playing the full 40 minutes and scoring 15 points. His clutch shooting from the charity stripe, where he went a perfect 6-for-6 in the second half, helped stymie Albany’s momentum.
Brendan Coyle, another local standout from Niskayuna, New York, provided crucial scoring support with 13 points, including a key three-pointer during Siena’s first-half run.
The game’s statistical profile highlighted the difference in efficiency. While both teams had an identical 62 possessions, Siena’s offensive rating of 116.8 dwarfed Albany’s mark of 102.4, underscoring the Saints’ superior shot-making and ability to draw fouls. Siena also won the battle on the offensive glass, securing seven offensive rebounds to Albany’s three, which led to valuable second-chance points.
The victory gives Siena positive momentum as it prepares to hit the road for a matchup at Holy Cross on Monday. Albany, still seeking its first win against a Division I opponent this season after victories over Paul Smiths and SUNY Delhi, will look to regroup quickly before a neutral-site game against Colgate next Friday.
