California Routs Sacramento State Behind Efficient Offense
BERKELEY, Calif. (Interstat) — The California Golden Bears used a dominant first-half offensive display and a stifling defensive effort to cruise past the Sacramento State Hornets 91-67 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Haas Pavilion.
A crowd of 4,295 watched as the Golden Bears improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 3-4.
California seized control of the game early, building a double-digit lead in the first half and never looking back. The Golden Bears shot a blistering 50.8 percent from the field for the game, connecting on 15 of 38 attempts from three-point range. Their offensive efficiency was a stark contrast to Sacramento State’s struggles, as the Hornets managed to make just 18 of 67 field goal attempts, a frigid 26.9 percent.
The game was decided in the opening period. After a competitive start that saw the score tied at 8-8, California unleashed a 17-5 run to build a commanding lead. The run was fueled by a balanced attack and lockdown defense that forced the Hornets into difficult shots and turnovers.
Chris Bell led the Golden Bears with a game-high 21 points, showcasing his scoring versatility from inside and beyond the arc. Justin Pippen added 16 points, five assists and two blocks, orchestrating the offense and making key defensive plays. Dai Dai Ames also chipped in 16 points and four assists, while John Camden filled the stat sheet with 14 points, five assists and a block.
The Golden Bears took a 47-33 lead into halftime, a margin that proved insurmountable for the visiting Hornets. Sacramento State’s offensive woes were encapsulated by an offensive rating of 85.6, a measure of points scored per 100 possessions, compared to California’s robust 115.2 rating.
Sacramento State was led by Brandon Gardner, who came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points. Mark Lavrenov logged a game-high 40 minutes and finished with 14 points, while Prophet Johnson added 12 points. The Hornets struggled to generate consistent offense, finishing with only three total assists as a team.
California’s defensive pressure was a constant theme, as they recorded seven steals and seven blocks, disrupting Sacramento State’s rhythm throughout the night. The Golden Bears also capitalized in transition, outscoring the Hornets 14-7 in fastbreak points.
Despite committing 12 turnovers to Sacramento State’s 10, California’s superior shooting and defensive execution rendered the turnover battle moot. The Hornets managed to stay relatively close at the free-throw line, making 24 of 30 attempts, but it was not nearly enough to overcome their shooting deficiencies from the field.
The victory extends California’s strong start to the season, with their only loss coming in a narrow three-point contest on the road against Kansas State. Sacramento State, meanwhile, has now lost three of its last four games after opening the season with two wins.
California next travels to face UCLA on Tuesday. Sacramento State returns home to host San Francisco State, also on Tuesday.
