Clemson Dominates Gardner-Webb in Home Opener
GREENVILLE, S.C. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming force, the Clemson Tigers dismantled the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 97 to 59 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at the Bi-Lo Center.
Playing in front of a crowd of 7,217, the Tigers improved to 2 wins and 0 losses on the young season, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs remained winless, falling to 0 wins and 2 losses. The final margin of victory was no surprise, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Clemson a 99.40 percent probability to win, and the Tigers easily covered the pregame spread of -30.5. The combined score of 156 points went under the over/under line of 148.5.
From the opening tip, Clemson’s size, speed, and defensive intensity proved too much for Gardner-Webb to handle. The Tigers built a commanding 45 to 30 lead by halftime and showed no signs of relenting after the break, outscoring the Runnin’ Bulldogs 52 to 29 in the second half.
The statistical dominance was stark. Clemson’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, particularly in the paint, where they outscored Gardner-Webb 52 to 22. The Tigers also capitalized heavily on Gardner-Webb’s mistakes, scoring 22 points off turnovers compared to just 5 for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Clemson’s defense was suffocating, forcing Gardner-Webb into difficult shots and converting defensive stops into transition opportunities, resulting in 11 fastbreak points.
Clemson’s balanced attack was led by a trio of standout performances. Nick Davidson, a 6-foot-10 forward from Mission Viejo, California, was a force on the interior, leading all scorers with 18 points while also pulling down 6 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action. His frontcourt partner, Carter Welling of Draper, Utah, recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in only 15 minutes off the bench.
Providing a dynamic spark was RJ Godfrey of Suwanee, Georgia. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a blocked shot in his 22 minutes, showcasing the versatile skill set that makes Clemson’s frontcourt so formidable.
The Tigers’ backcourt also contributed significantly. Ace Buckner, a 6-foot-2 guard from Dallas, Texas, chipped in 11 points and 3 assists, while fellow guard Jestin Porter of Houston, Texas, added 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Dillon Hunter provided steady play with 7 points and 4 rebounds, and Zac Foster, despite scoring only 2 points, orchestrated the offense effectively with a team-high 5 assists.
For Gardner-Webb, the bright spots were few. Jacob Hudson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Houston, Texas, led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 11 points and 7 rebounds in 31 minutes. Jacob Hogarth, a 6-foot-9 forward from Brooklyn, New York, battled inside to collect 7 rebounds to go with his 5 points.
The loss continues a difficult start to the season for Gardner-Webb, which opened its campaign with an 87 to 60 road loss at Minnesota on Monday. The schedule offers little respite, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs now face a grueling stretch of seven consecutive road games. Their next contest is at Elon on Saturday, Nov. 15, followed by games at DePaul, Richmond, and a multi-team event in Wilmington, North Carolina.
For Clemson, the victory builds momentum following a dominant 88 to 38 season-opening win over New Hampshire. The Tigers’ schedule now begins to ramp up in difficulty. They will host Morehead State on Tuesday, Nov. 11, before a significant early-season test on the road against Georgetown on Saturday, Nov. 15. Later in the month, Clemson will face a challenging neutral-site game against West Virginia in Charleston, South Carolina, and a tough road contest at Alabama in early December.
Friday’s contest served as a clear statement of intent from the Tigers, who look every bit the part of a team with aspirations of contending in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Their depth, physicality, and offensive firepower were on full display, leaving little doubt about the gulf in class between the two programs on this night. For Gardner-Webb, the search for its first win and a more competitive performance continues as it navigates a daunting non-conference slate.
