Sacred Heart Rallies Past Mount Saint Mary’s in Second-Half Surge

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — A second-half surge fueled by efficient three-point shooting and a balanced scoring attack propelled Sacred Heart to a 77-69 victory over Mount Saint Mary’s in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Friday night at the William Pitt Center.

In a contest that saw 10 lead changes and was tied on seven occasions, the Pioneers overcame a one-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Mountaineers 46-37 after intermission. The decisive stretch came midway through the second half when Sacred Heart leveraged its offensive precision to create separation.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the first characterized by defensive struggles and missed opportunities for both sides. Mount Saint Mary’s took a 32-31 lead into the break despite shooting just 34% from the field. Sacred Heart was scarcely better at 35%, but kept pace thanks to five first-half three-pointers.

The second half, however, belonged to the Pioneers’ offensive execution. Sacred Heart shot 48% from the floor and connected on 9 of 20 attempts from beyond the arc after halftime. Their offensive rating of 114.8 for the game, compared to Mount Saint Mary’s 101.9, underscored the efficiency gap. The Pioneers also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 13 of 17 attempts, while the Mountaineers struggled, converting only 7 of 12.

The most critical sequence unfolded over a four-minute span late in the game. With Sacred Heart leading 60-57 and just over six minutes remaining, the Pioneers embarked on a 9-2 run to establish their first double-digit lead of the night at 69-59. The run was punctuated by a three-pointer from Anquan Hill and a driving layup from Hill, both assisted by Dashon Gittens. Mount Saint Mary’s, which had relied heavily on its interior game, could not counter with a sustained run of its own, missing several key three-point attempts during the pivotal stretch.

Sacred Heart’s victory was a collective effort, with four players scoring 17 points. Yann Farell, a 6-foot-7 forward from Crowley, Texas, filled the stat sheet with 17 points, three assists and two blocks in 32 minutes. Nyle Ralph-Beyer of West Chester, Pennsylvania, added 17 points, and Hill, from Philadelphia, contributed 17 points, two assists and a block. Gittens, a Hartford native, orchestrated the offense with 12 points, four assists and two blocks.

Mount Saint Mary’s was led by Luke McEldon, the 6-foot-10 center from London, England, who scored 19 points. Arlandus Keyes of Florissant, Missouri, added 17 points and four assists, while Xavier Lipscomb chipped in 10 points and four assists.

A significant factor in the outcome was three-point shooting. Sacred Heart made 14 of 38 attempts from deep, while Mount Saint Mary’s connected on only 8 of 34. The Mountaineers compensated somewhat with a dominant 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 16 second-chance points, but could not overcome their poor perimeter shooting.

Defensively, Sacred Heart protected the rim effectively, recording six blocks to Mount Saint Mary’s three. The Pioneers also committed only nine turnovers, forcing 11 from the Mountaineers.

With the win, Sacred Heart improved to 13-18 overall. Mount Saint Mary’s fell to 14-16. An announced crowd of 1,016 watched the game, which surpassed the pregame point spread where Sacred Heart was favored by two points. The total score of 146 fell under the over/under line of 149.

The victory gave Sacred Heart a regular-season series split, avenging an 87-80 loss to the Mountaineers on Dec. 3. Mount Saint Mary’s will look to rebound on the road against Fairfield on Sunday.
