Wildcats Overcome Halftime Deficit, Top Texans in WAC Showdown
ABILENE, Texas (Interstat) — A dominant second-half performance fueled by a decisive run and a parade to the free-throw line propelled Abilene Christian to a 73-59 victory over rival Tarleton State in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Moody Coliseum.
The Wildcats, overcoming a sluggish first half, outscored the Texans 47-27 after halftime to turn a tight contest into a comfortable win. The victory evened both teams’ season records at 12-13 and avenged a narrow 84-80 loss Abilene Christian suffered at Tarleton State just over a month ago.
The game’s pivotal sequence began with Abilene Christian clinging to a 30-28 lead early in the second half. Over the next six minutes, the Wildcats unleashed a 15-5 surge to seize control. The run was emblematic of the half, featuring defensive stops that led to transition opportunities and relentless attacks drawing fouls. Zy Wright, who scored 17 points, capped the burst with a three-point play, giving the Wildcats a 45-33 advantage with 13:16 remaining. Tarleton State never got the deficit back to single digits.
Bradyn Hubbard, the Wildcats’ top performer, led all scorers with 19 points. His consistent offensive pressure was a catalyst, but it was the collective effort at the charity stripe that broke the game open. Abilene Christian attempted 31 free throws, making 25, while Tarleton State managed only 11 makes on 20 attempts. In the second half alone, the Wildcats were 19-of-24 from the line, consistently halting any potential momentum from the visitors.
Tarleton State, which led 32-26 at halftime, saw its offense stagnate dramatically after the break. The Texans shot just 36% from the floor in the second half and committed 11 of their 20 total turnovers. Their offensive rating of 83.7 for the game underscored their struggles to generate efficient scoring against an active Abilene Christian defense that recorded 10 steals and forced numerous live-ball errors.
Chilaydrien Newton provided a critical spark off the bench for the Wildcats, scoring all 15 of his points in the second half. His back-to-back three-pointers during the decisive run stretched the Wildcat lead and energized the home crowd of 1,196. Joseph Venzant anchored the interior with nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Cade Hornecker added six points and four rebounds.
For Tarleton State, balance was not enough to overcome the scoring drought. Kade Douglas led the Texans with 13 points, while Andy Sigiscar and Jordan Mizell each added 12. Sigiscar also contributed three blocks. DJ Dormu facilitated the offense with a team-high six assists to go with 10 points, but the Texans’ 22-of-47 shooting from the field and 4-of-12 from three-point range could not keep pace with Abilene Christian’s second-half explosion.
The Wildcats also won key hustle categories, out-rebounding Tarleton State 11-6 on the offensive glass and converting 24 points off turnovers compared to the Texans’ 18. While both teams played a frenetic, turnover-prone style, Abilene Christian’s ability to capitalize on those mistakes and earn easy points at the foul line proved to be the ultimate difference.
The win gives Abilene Christian a measure of confidence as the teams prepare for a quick rematch Monday afternoon in Stephenville. According to pregame metrics, the Wildcats were projected with a 59% probability to win and covered the spread as a two-point favorite. The combined point total of 132 fell short of the over/under line of 138.
For Tarleton State, the loss continues a pattern of narrow conference setbacks, while Abilene Christian builds momentum having won two of its last three games. The Wildcats’ second-half formula of defensive intensity and offensive execution at the line provided a clear blueprint for success as the WAC schedule enters its final stretch.
