Tarleton State at Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch of a recent overtime thriller is set for Saturday when the Tarleton State Texans visit the Southern Utah Thunderbirds at Centrum Arena.

The teams last met on Jan. 15 in Cedar City, where Southern Utah (8-15, 3-5 WAC) edged Tarleton State (11-11, 2-6) 106-105 in an extra period. That result is indicative of both teams’ seasons, defined by narrow margins and offensive firepower struggling to overcome defensive inconsistencies.

The Texans arrive looking to snap a five-game skid, with their last win coming on Jan. 3. Guard Camron McDowell has been a bright spot, averaging 18.8 points over his last five contests. He scored 24 points in the first meeting with Southern Utah and is coming off a 16-point performance in a 65-59 loss to Utah Tech on Jan. 31.

Southern Utah, meanwhile, seeks to build momentum after a 79-76 road victory at Abilene Christian on Jan. 31 snapped its own two-game losing streak. That win was fueled by a career-high 29 points from guard Elijah Duval, who also added seven rebounds and three assists. Duval, who had nine points in the January win over Tarleton, is averaging 18.4 points over his last seven games.

Both teams sit in the bottom half of the WAC standings and will be desperate for a conference win to improve their positioning ahead of the league tournament. Tarleton State will aim to control the tempo and leverage McDowell’s scoring, while the Thunderbirds will rely on Duval’s hot hand and home-court advantage at the Centrum, where they are 5-4 this season.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. MST Saturday. It will be the second of two regular-season meetings; the teams play again in Stephenville, Texas, on Feb. 19.
