Akron Edges Eastern Michigan in Tight MAC Road Contest

YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the Akron Zips escaped the Eastern Michigan Eagles’ Convocation Center with a narrow 66-64 victory in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball clash on Tuesday night. The win, secured by a dramatic three-pointer in the final seconds, extended Akron’s winning streak to five games and improved its record to 17-4, while Eastern Michigan fell to 9-13.

The contest was a stark departure from the offensive fireworks often associated with Akron’s season. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, combining to shoot under 38% from the field. The game’s tempo was fractured by 28 total turnovers and physical defense, resulting in a final score that fell well below the pregame over/under line.

Akron built its early advantage on the back of a methodical first half, taking a 31-27 lead into the break. The Zips connected on six three-pointers before halftime, with Bowen Hardman providing a key spark off the bench by hitting three from beyond the arc. Eastern Michigan, meanwhile, leaned on the scoring of Gregory Lawson, who kept the Eagles within striking distance.

The second half saw the Eagles mount a sustained challenge. They chipped away at the deficit and, fueled by the interior presence of Mohammad Habhab and the continued scoring of Lawson and Addison Patterson, eventually seized momentum. A Patterson dunk with just over two minutes remaining gave Eastern Michigan a 59-57 lead, capping a rally that put the home crowd of 1,452 in a frenzy and placed the heavily favored Zips on the ropes.

The game’s decisive sequence unfolded in the final 20 seconds. With Akron trailing 64-63 and the clock ticking down, point guard Tavari Johnson, who led all scorers with 17 points, drove into the lane. Encountering a wall of Eastern Michigan defenders, including the shot-blocking Habhab, Johnson kicked the ball out to the perimeter. Sharron Young, stationed on the wing, quickly reversed it to Bowen Hardman in the corner. Hardman, who had been cold in the second half, caught and fired a high-arcing three-pointer over a closing defender. The shot found nothing but net with nine seconds remaining, silencing the arena and putting Akron ahead 66-64.

Eastern Michigan had two final opportunities to tie or win. On the ensuing possession, Jon Sanders drove and found Lawson for a contested pull-up jumper from the elbow that missed. Merritt Alderink secured the offensive rebound but his rushed put-back attempt at the buzzer was off target, sealing the dramatic escape for the Zips.

Beyond Johnson’s 17 points, Akron received 12 points each from Young, Evan Mahaffey, and Hardman. The Zips won despite being out-assisted 10-7 and committing 12 turnovers. Eastern Michigan was led by Lawson’s 17 points and 16 from Patterson. Habhab was a force defensively with 11 points, three assists, and two blocks.

The victory, while narrow, allowed Akron to maintain its position atop the MAC standings. The Zips will look to carry momentum into a non-conference road test at Troy on Saturday. Eastern Michigan, which has suffered several close losses this season, will aim to rebound on the road at Appalachian State, also on Saturday.
