Appalachian State Stuns Troy With Dominant Road Victory
TROY, Ala. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame expectations, Appalachian State delivered a commanding defensive performance to throttle Troy 66-44 in a Sun Belt Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena.
The Mountaineers, installed as seven-point underdogs with analytics giving the Trojans an 83.8% chance to win, flipped the script from the opening tip. They built a double-digit lead in the first half and never relented, holding a potent Troy offense to its lowest scoring output of the season in front of a crowd of 3,256.
The most decisive stretch of the game came early, setting a tone of Appalachian State control and Troy frustration. After trading baskets in the opening minutes, the Mountaineers unleashed a 14-0 run that spanned nearly seven minutes, turning a 7-7 tie into a 21-7 stranglehold. The run was fueled by the offensive prowess of Kasen Jennings and a defensive effort that forced the Trojans into a series of missed shots and turnovers. Troy went 0-for-6 from the field with two giveaways during the pivotal drought, a hole from which they would never recover. Appalachian State led 36-24 at halftime and extended the advantage after the break, leading by as many as 24 points.
The story of the game was written from beyond the three-point arc and in overall offensive efficiency. Appalachian State shot 13 for 37 from deep, while Troy endured a frigid afternoon, connecting on just 4 of 27 attempts from long range. The Mountaineers scored 66 points on 61 possessions, an offensive rating of 108.6, while the Trojans managed only 44 points on 59 possessions, a meager rating of 74.7. Troy’s 44 points were a season low.
Kasen Jennings was the offensive engine for Appalachian State, scoring a game-high 33 points in 37 minutes. The 6-foot-3 guard from Atlanta was efficient from all levels, hitting five three-pointers and adding seven rebounds. His backcourt partner, Alonzo Dodd, orchestrated the offense with nine assists to go with 11 points and seven rebounds. Michael Marcus added eight points and seven rebounds.
For Troy, Theo Seng led the way with 13 points, but no other Trojan player reached double figures. Jerrell Bellamy provided a brief spark off the bench with nine points, including a three-pointer and an alley-oop dunk, but the team’s overall shooting woes – 18 of 55 from the field – proved insurmountable. The Trojans did win the battle in the paint, 26-16, but it was a negligible advantage on a afternoon dominated by Appalachian State’s perimeter play.
The victory improves Appalachian State to 15-9 overall and marks its third consecutive win, continuing a strong run in conference play. The Mountaineers host South Alabama on Wednesday. Troy, which entered the game averaging over 80 points per contest, sees a three-game win streak snapped and falls to 15-8. The Trojans will look to regroup on the road at Georgia State on Wednesday.
The combined score of 110 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 135.5, a testament to the defensive intensity, particularly from the visiting Mountaineers, who completely stifled one of the Sun Belt’s most prolific offenses.
