Saint Peter’s Holds Off Mount St. Mary’s in Metro Atlantic Contest
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Interstat) — In a grinding Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference clash defined by defense and decisive turnovers, Saint Peter’s used a dominant performance in the final minutes to pull away from Mount St. Mary’s for a 66-58 victory on Friday night at a sparsely populated Yanitelli Center.
A crowd of 1,012 watched as the Peacocks, favored by statistical models entering the contest, improved to 12-7 overall. The Mountaineers, who had defeated Saint Peter’s just three weeks prior, fell to 9-14.
The game’s pivotal sequence arrived late in a second half that saw seven lead changes. With Saint Peter’s clinging to a 59-57 lead and just over four minutes remaining, the Peacocks’ defense locked down. Mount St. Mary’s committed three consecutive turnovers and missed two free throws over its next four possessions. Saint Peter’s capitalized with a Zaakir Williamson jump shot and a Lucas Scroggins dunk off a feed from Brent Bland, pushing the lead to eight points with 1:41 to play and effectively sealing the game.
The contest was a stark contrast in offensive execution. Saint Peter’s, despite shooting just 35.6% from the field, leveraged its defensive pressure into offense. The Peacocks forced 15 Mountaineer turnovers, converting them into 21 points, while committing only seven turnovers of their own. Mount St. Mary’s managed just six points off turnovers. The Peacocks also held a significant advantage in assists (8-3) and steals (8-3), highlighting their more fluid and disruptive style.
Mount St. Mary’s, which led 33-32 at halftime, was hampered by cold shooting, particularly from beyond the arc where they finished 6 of 23 (26.1%). Their offensive rating of 93.5 on 62 possessions underscored a night of struggles against the Peacocks’ physical defense. The Mountaineers did find success inside, outscoring Saint Peter’s 28-20 in the paint, but it was not enough to overcome their miscues.
Brent Bland led Saint Peter’s with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and added three assists. His backcourt mate, Bryce Eaton, orchestrated the offense with 10 points and a game-high six assists. Williamson provided a crucial interior presence, scoring 10 points and grabbing three offensive rebounds. The Peacocks’ depth was also a factor, with Shaedon Simpson adding seven points and Scroggins contributing six points and strong defense.
For Mount St. Mary’s, Justin Amadi was a bright spot, scoring a game-high 18 points on efficient 5-of-7 shooting from the field and adding eight free throws. Xavier Lipscomb chipped in 11 points and three assists, but also accounted for five of his team’s turnovers. The Mountaineers’ offense often stagnated, evidenced by their mere three total assists for the game.
The first half set the tone for a defensive battle. Saint Peter’s opened an early lead behind the inside play of Williamson and the outside shooting of Bland, but Mount St. Mary’s responded with an 8-0 run midway through the period, fueled by Amadi’s activity. The teams traded blows until the final seconds of the half when Arlandus Keyes hit a 3-pointer to give the Mountaineers a narrow one-point edge at the break.
The second half remained tight, with neither team leading by more than five points until Saint Peter’s final surge. The Mountaineers last led at 57-56 following two Amadi free throws with 4:22 remaining. From that point, the Peacocks closed the game on a 10-1 run, with Williamson scoring six of those points, to secure the season-series split.
Saint Peter’s next travels to face Rider on Sunday. Mount St. Mary’s returns home to host Manhattan on Sunday, looking to snap a two-game skid.
